Of course, all of this wouldn't have been possible without the help of hundreds of people painstakingly collecting mushrooms, putting tiny sea snails in sampling tubes while diving in a current, recording sounds for @xeno-canto.bsky.social that we used for the AI, etc. Thank you all!

So that's whales, whale barnacles, and barnacles that live on the whale barnacles. We're really trying to collect the DNA of all the species that you might encounter in the Netherlands!

PFASs build up in fat tissue, and Naturalis has whale skins going back to the 1820s, so that helps the researchers build up a time line of PFAS concentrations. But since the specimens were out anyway, we also took samples for our DNA barcode library.

It's called Penicillium geertdesnooi, named after Dutch ecologist (and @knaw-nl.bsky.social research director) Geert de Snoo. The poppy is Geert's favourite flower, and the soil was collected in Zeist, the town where Geert was born, as part of a Citizen Science project with Dutch school children.
