The it's jank complaints are so valid, the combat does get more fun but not until much later in the game with upgrades and stuff.

As someone who was scared of DMing for years, just do it! Just hop in and figure it out as you go. In my experience I could read all I wanted or watch as many YT videos about DMing as I could, but I didn't learn how until I actually did it! It's not as scary as it seems!! :)
