This is the kind of plastic wrap you need.

This brand worked for me. It doesn’t say anywhere on the box that it is actually PVC, but it must be.

And the video. I should have poured more sugar but by the time I did a second one, my sugar had cooled too much.

If anyone needs to know this, most plastic wrap in the US is made from polyethylene, but plastic wrap in Europe is made from PVC. This really matters if you are trying to make a decorative sugar dome for a cake after you saw them do it on a British baking show. #chemsky

No one is talking about the fact that adiabatic is not accepted in spelling bee today? What are the rest of you doing on your flights to #ACSFall2025? (And no, I haven’t finished my slides yet. It’s a long way from the west coast to DC. I’ve still got plenty of time.)

I had so much fun being a judge at Cal Poly DataFest this afternoon! If you aren’t familiar with DataFest, it is a two-day undergrad competition where students find and tell a story in a dataset. All the students did amazing work! If your campus hosts a DataFest I highly recommend volunteering.

Congratulations to our new ACS COMP officers! I had such a great experience in the COMP chair progression, meeting so many new people and and working with the COMP community. If you aren’t involved with COMP yet, you are missing out! You can find out more and join at acscomp.org!

In October, I organized a symposium at SERMACS in honor of my beloved graduate advisor, David Sherrill, winning the Herty Medal. If you ever organize a symposium in someone’s honor, it turns out everyone’s favorite thing is if you have cookies that look like the honoree’s face.
