Once again, Star Trek nails social commentary. Even if the conflict in the Middle East is "over some piece of land", the reality is that "the basis for peace must be personal".

Movements like @standing-together.bsky.social and Hand in Hand (www.handinhandk12.org) are building that peace.

New paper! Using AI to track the frequency of vocalisations across a (very) wide range of species

In wolves, dolphins, etc, the up-down of frequency of their calls is where all the information is. Neural nets can do this automatically!

Yesterday, 11th of Shvat, was the second anniversary of Darwin's passing 💔💔💔
Those of you who knew him, please remember a dog who was always there to cheer up anyone he met, and whose absence still weighs so heavily on those who loved him

3/3 Tigers, rhinos, leopards all take a toll on the villagers and their livestock, but as one said to me, "When I go into the forest, I'm going into the tiger's home. He's not coming into mine."

1/3 🐯🧵I work with local communities in #Nepal to find ways of coexisiting with #tiger populations. The loss of human life is staggering, but it's not just a question of "too many tigers". The interaction between humans and the environment is key...

I'm a sucker for old zoology books, so when I saw this one for £3 at G. David in Cambridge, I snapped it up. Only to find that a previous owner had placed several carefully snipped newspaper articles and little sketches between the pages 🤩. A window into a Victorian amateur naturalist's life
