This was a passion project with Dr Jean Franco: an edited volume of highly reputable Filipino scholars based in the Philippines. May we inspire more rigorous analysis by local voices with deep lived experiences. Thanks to everyone for participating in our Nov 7 book launch 🥰

Lighting op-ed I wrote in a couple of hours. Thanks to all my colleagues who were my quick sources of information. The UP Department of Political Science was like a newsroom earlier.

Once Duterte’s ICC trial is over, then I can finally write that book about Philippine democracy. But for now, I’ll keep observing. 😊

Quoted here
"Violence has always been an essential part of their identity as a political dynasty… For the Dutertes, there's always a need for an enemy."

Death threats in Marcos-Duterte feud highlight the Philippines' problem with political violence. My analysis

Here's why the Philippine vice-president's threat to assassinate her president wasn't that shocking
Family dynasties have a stranglehold on Filipino politics — and this week was a reminder that some dynasties at the top are militaristic and fond of violence.

Proud of Aletheia Valenciano Edcel John A. Ibarra and Miguel Hermo. They did very well, presenting our initial findings. There is really no substitute for fieldwork. Research publications are in the pipeline. For now, they deserve some time off. 🥰

The unraveling of the Uniteam is the headline in @channelnewsasia.bsky.social this morning 😨 Not the kind of limelight the country needs right now 😐 Nothing like a nasty dynastic catfight to further dampen investor confidence & undermine political stability 😢 #Budol

Hoping that more institutions and social forces call out the shameless display of political hubris/tantrums/meltdown/brattiness that is inviting the country to once again undergo a pernicious cycle of political instability.

Again, not everything is about you.

Here's my first ever Fulcrum article as a Visiting Fellow of the Singapore-based ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute. I talk about the Philippines' status as a lower-middle income country since the World Bank started its income-based country classification in 1989.

When I was a younger faculty, I wonder why my mentor would just give me opportunities to attend international conferences. For me, why would she do this? 20 yrs after, I understood her, since I am now in her shoes. It’s such a joy to open doors for your younger colleagues. This is my professorship🥰

I miss my quiet, solitary walks around UP Diliman’s Acad Oval at dusk. There’s just so many people on campus right now. The campus atmosphere has radically changed.
