Dear Younger Ladies, Let’s break down the “Friend Code,” because too many girls are going missing or getting hurt—and that’s not okay. This is how we “Old Schoolers” do it: Code #1: We leave together, stay together, and come back together. NO—you’re not leaving with some random dude, and NO—I’m not leaving you at the party alone! Code #2: Both of us can’t be wasted (neither of us should be). At least one person needs to stay alert and aware of our surroundings. Code #3: If one of us needs to go to the bathroom or step outside—we’re all going! No exceptions. Period. Code #4: We do not accept drinks from strangers—unless we’re at the bar watching the bartender pour them. Code #5: If I think you’re too drunk to function, we’re leaving the party early. We can argue later about how you “messed up the night.” Code #6: If you go missing, you’ve got 15–30 minutes max to show up before I start shutting the place down. We’re all looking for you! Everyone else can call the cops—I’m not going home without you. Code #7: If there’s a fight, it better be one-on-one. Otherwise, we’re all in it together. (But honestly, we’re too classy for that kind of drama.) Code #8 — The Golden Rule: The drop-off person checks in, or everyone who drove checks in when they get home. If we don’t hear from you—we’re pulling up to your house. Period. Because somewhere along the way, this generation got the Friend Code all messed up. This is how we were raised. This is how we protect each other. Because I want my daughter—and every other woman—to know these rules.
