One point about central California I'm not seeing is simply the risks from "normal" summer heat. Even a few decades ago, we would get 100F+ degree days for over a week at a time. People would die or be hospitalized even with heat warnings all over the media. Imagine no warnings + climate change...

Nothing to apologize for! There's reasons I chose not to, but you are right that people should know they can complain in such cases.

Yes, I repeatedly tried to end the conversation, but had to start ignoring them to get them to stop. They even tapped me on the knee a couple of times after I started reading to try to re-start the convo. I get that you personally haven't had that experience, but that doesn't mean mine is made up.

Glad that that's been your experience. Lots of other people in this thread have had uncomfortable or annoying interactions, however, so they use body language to discourage conversations. Or they're just introverts who find small talk exhausting. Not sure why that appears to upset you. 🤷♀️

I had recently started working at a Japanese company and was flying with some new coworkers to a meeting in North America, so I didn't want to get a reputation for being "difficult". I just put on headphones, pulled out a book, and pointedly stopped responding. They were offended but left me alone.

Uhhh...as I said in the post I was in my early 20's when that happened, so it would be a bit early for Depends. Others are welcome to chat on a plane, I'm just explaining why I eventually chose not to encourage it with me.

No, I understand that I might be missing out on a pleasant conversation. My point is that after some VERY unpleasant situations that started normally I'm more stand-offish. I'll give a stranger a chance if I can walk away, but not if I am trapped next to them for hours.

I learned my lesson in my early 20's when I got seated next to a couple of nice-seeming elderly Texan men on a trans-Pacific flight. Started out fine, but then they started making creepy comments, like asking to put their heads in my lap. It was a very uncomfortable 10 hours...

I get the sentiment, but if I'm going to be physically strapped into a seat next to this person for several hours, I'm not rolling the dice that they're not a political zealot, well-meaning Evangelical that wants to tell me about Jesus, or just a monologer. There's no way to politely leave!

Some days my social anxiety makes calling a stranger too much, so calling after 5:00 makes it manageable while still having the same impact. ❤️

I have my senators and representative's direct lines saved to my contacts. I've been calling every day while commuting to work. I choose one point to focus on each time (today was RFK) so it only takes 5 mins total. If you don't want to speak to someone, call after 5:00 and you'll get voicemail.
