So I prefer Xmas music that doesn't really -sound like- Xmas music and that was the theme for a playlist I made for a party I hosted back in 2019. I return to it every year now, updating here and there. Offering up 2024's version to the skyline. About 2/3 Xmas songs + 1/3 cozy house party vibes. 😌

At the funeral of my great aunt in Philly years ago I remember reading a eulogy in the program from one of her former students, reflecting on how she helped them spur their career as a writer instead of a social worker. I was gobsmacked when I got to the end and saw it signed "Nikki Giovanni"

Renowned poet and Black arts movement icon Nikki Giovanni dies at 81
The poet and activist was a leading figure of the Black Arts Movement. Giovanni was working on her upcoming book of poetry, set to publish in the fall.
