Among all this anime, I DO write about books from time to time! Recently I read Nghi Vo's queer and magical Great Gatsby remix, The Chosen and the Beautiful, and it haunted me so much I had to make a post about it. Enjoy! theafictionado.wordpress.com/2025/11/13/t...

It's time for a new anime season!

Whether it’s taking you somewhere escapist or using genre to dig its teeth into gnarly realities, it’s more important than ever to actively support queer fiction, so take a look at my list of scifi, fantasy, and horror and see what calls to you! theafictionado.wordpress.com/2025/06/26/f...

Becoming the Protagonist of Golf (and Other Character Motivations)

New blog, this one about how important an emotional core and a character arc - even a simple one! - are to making hobby shows really land ⛳

I got to attend the very first Trans Book Festival - a day of panels from writers, poets, artists, and editors all under the trans umbrella! Following a call to document our own history, I've written up my experience in this blog post 🏳️‍⚧️ 📚 theafictionado.wordpress.com/2025/03/06/a...

Down with the system, long live the psychic lesbians! My first book post of the year is all about METAL FROM HEAVEN: theafictionado.wordpress.com/2025/02/20/m...

In shocking news, I'm enjoying an isekai anime this season - so what is it about ZENSHU that's lighting up my brain when superficially similar premises often put me to sleep? Thoughts here! theafictionado.wordpress.com/2025/02/06/i...

Evergreen screencap. She is truly an icon

One final sample because this made me laugh. "Oh no, I forgot about Anthy!" Utena has never been less relatable. Couldn't be me girl
January 26, 2025 at 1:59 AM
Most interesting for me, these issues had chapters from the Utena manga! Empty Movement will have all these archived somewhere so I won't post every page, but isn't it wild to see this series here, in the context a lot of English-language fans would have discovered it? Why is the font like that??

And you can order these super cool new titles NOT FOR KIDS on VHS by MAIL ORDER! Cutting edge!

I love stuff like this, they're such great time capsules of early fandom and the licencing landscape. Look, there's a whole article about how strange and exciting it is that they make manga just about food. You heard of this? Far out!

Today I had the surreal pleasure of finding some 1999 issues of Animerica Extra in a vintage and collectables shop

Obligatory Spotify share 🎵 These are all pop ladies except for the top entry, which is a video game composer... it's always my writing playlists coming in with the steel chair lmao

Magilumiere Magical Girls Inc and A Magical Girl Retires are both distinctly “adult” takes on the familiar magical girl framework… though in a very different way to other, similarly genre-aware stories that have come before 👀 Read my thoughts here! theafictionado.wordpress.com/2024/11/28/a...

God, when did I last update this? Have I told you all how much I loved The Pairing? I don't usually read contemporary adult romance but hot damn, Casey McQuiston hooked me in. It's the "childhood friends to lovers to tragic breakup to haha hey we found each other again now what" of it all

Reviving this thread to say that SWORDCROSSED was also really fun. There's some swords, sure, but mostly it's like a fantasy comedy of manners feat. corporate espionage! Who knew I could care so much about a completely imaginary textile industry?

I'm blogging about genre again 🤔 this time, what do people mean when they market something as "cozy fantasy"? Is it a sweet, fuzzy magical story where Nothing Bad Ever Happens... or something more complex?

And finally, for our mid-year mid-point, a fantasy novel that's raw and angry but also surprisingly heartwarming for something with so much body horror in it... it's the asexual monster love story Someone You Can Build a Nest In!
