Day hike from Sams Gap to Big Bald, NC on the AT as very cold artic air begins seeping in from the NW. Temps at the base when I started was a balmy 43 degrees. At the summit (5420'), about 3 hours later, temps were in the low 20's, with snow and 30mph winds.
