sounds like the game is too easy but has spikes of high difficulty that one player is having a harder time avoiding. what I would do is get rid of both playtesters, replace them with my own guy that always agrees with me.

yeah, once you've got a bunch of interlocking mechanics it gets a lot trickier. that's why I mostly make games about jumping and punching.

I'm a huge proponent of finding the fun of a game very early on, and keeping it at the center of the project always. losing sight of that can cause an identity crisis, which can lead to scope creep, etc. if your game was fun early on, you can always strip it back to that point, which is a lot safer!
