I watched Wives Never Know (1936). A marital comedy of errors starring Charlie Ruggles, Mary Boland, and Adolphe Menjou. Menjou has written a book about the horrors of marriage and proceeds to endanger an old schoolmate's healthy (Ruggles) marriage. Lots of farcical hijinks. A solid 7.

I watched Wolf of New York (1940) starring Edmund Lowe and Rose Hobart. I've always liked Lowe. He's a defense attorney who defends some slimy characters and Hobart is the love interest and conscience. There's lots of corruption and murder. Not a grade A production but a solid 6.5.

I subjected myself to Danger: Diabolik yesterday. An Italian production from 1968 and directed by Mario Bava. A campy, psychedelic representative of the time. John Phillip Law as a high tech thief and Marisa Mell as his sexy muse. They battle the law represented by Michel Piccoli.

Gangster Story from 1959. Directed by and starring Walter Matthau. Matthau as a sociopathic bank robber/killer who falls for a blonde librarian played by his real life wife, Carol Grace. Truly a low budget B movie but has some positives. Recommended for Matthau fans.

I took in Star of Midnight (1935) starring William Powell and Ginger Rogers. Attorney and amateur sleuth Powell reluctantly gets drawn into a complicated missing woman/murder mystery. Rogers is the love interest and comic foil. Hats off to the Thin Man series. Recommended.

I watched Miss Polly, a 45 minute Hal Roach comedy production starring Zasu Pitts. Zasu takes an interest in the troubles of a young couple whose plan to get married is stymied by a controlling mother. This evolves into Zasu against the town's moral hypocrites. A love potion helps.

I watched Room Service (1938), a Marx Brothers treat. Minor roles for Lucille Ball and Ann Miller. Groucho is a broke theatrical producer about to be evicted from his hotel room for failure to pay. He and the brothers engage in multiple daft plans to avoid eviction. Some very funny moments. Recco!

I watched the Marx Brothers in Animal Crackers (1930). I had not seen this one. Lots of loony and zany madness as Groucho the big game hunter returns to a lavish welcome back from Africa. Chico and Harpo engage in their patented talents. Some funny scenes and one-liners but it is mostly skits.

I watched Let's Face It from 1943, starring Bob Hope and Betty Hutton. A wartime comedy but pretty thin soup. Hope and Hutton are to be married but he gets himself in a jam and makes it worse with a harebrained scheme to get a hold of some cash. Mildly entertaining.

Today I watched When Were You Born? (1938). A low budget murder mystery starring Ana May Wong. Margaret Lindsay has a small role. Wong is an astrologist who predicts a man's death. She is held by the police but proves invaluable with her skills in solving a murder. Watch if you like Ana like I do.

I watched The Pizza Triangle (1970) last night. An Italian romance and black comedy starring Mastroianni, Monica Vitti and Giancarlo Giannini. A love triangle involving those three with the backdrop of fascists versus communists. My interest ebbed and flowed.

I watched Nocturne last night (1946). A B film noir starring George Raft and Lynn Bari. Raft is a detective bounced off the police force. Bari is a player in a murder case. Lots of intrigue and atmosphere, a few funny lines but little else. Mabel Paige as Raft's mother is a stand out.

I saw The Lady From Shanghai (1947) last week. I saw it many years ago and was impressed. Less so this time knowing the outcome. I'm a big Welles fan but I'm pushing this one down the list of my Welles' faves. Glenn Anders was terrific as the wacky conspirator.

I watched The Defense Rests (1934) last night. Starring Jean Arthur, Jack Holt and a number of groovy character actors. Jean is a young law graduate and Holt a jaded mob defending lawyer who needs a kick in the butt. An enjoyable time had.

Here's a silent I watched the other night from 1924. He Who Gets Slapped, starring Lon Chaney, John Gilbert and Norma Shearer. A dramatic and romantic revenge film that is very creative for it's moment. Recommended.
