Text reads as follows: Introduction: Different exploratory movements are used to perceive different properties of hand-held objects. Different wielding movements are used to perceive different properties of wielded objects. Different postural sway movements are used to visually perceive geometric or affordance properties of a viewed surface. Experiment 1: Are different probing movements used to perceive geometric or affordance properties of a surface probed by hand? Participants probed an occluded surface and reported angle of the surface or whether they could stand on the surface. Acceleration data was collected using an OPAL sensor on the hand (APDM labs). There were no differences in mean magnitude of acceleration across intentions or angles. There were also no differences in variability of acceleration across intentions or angles. And there were no differences in Effort to Compress (ETC, a measure of complexity) across intentions or angles. Experiment 2: Differences in exploratory movements might emerge in a less familiar perceptual task. Are different probing movements used to perceive geometric or affordance properties of a surface probed by foot? Participants probed an occluded surface and reported angle of the surface or whether they could stand on the surface. Mean magnitude of accelerations differed across angle but not across intentions. There were no differences in variability of acceleration across intentions or angles. And there were no differences in Effort to Compress (ETC) across intentions or angles. Discussion: It is possible that there are no differences in exploratory probing movements across these two tasks. It is also possible that such differences will only be revealed with a larger sample size in Experiment 2 or with more sensitive statistical analyses (e.g., linear mixed effects models).
