I try to learn all the time, make stuff sometimes, and dream about our universe the rest of the time.

Proud Neptune-stan. Ask me about Neptune. (she/her)
Dual-use technologies like GPS & Starlink are subject to EAR & ITAR.

If SpaceX hadn't shut off Starlink, they would have (arguably) been in violation of US law by allowing weaponization of dual-use technology intended for civilian use.

Just like GPS units turn off above 600m/s AND/OR set altitude

No.

This "fact" is a fairly common misunderstanding of what the stat is measuring.

First, there is no "a photon" that is making a trip from the core to the outer layer. Photons are absorbed, emitted, reabsorbed, then re-emitted over & over again by the sun's plasma. 1/2

From a great post by a researcher, the same math at different scales shows different abilities. Even more interestingly, there are "critical thresholds" for which abilities emerge.

I can't emphasize how important this breakthrough is. It's not obvious that this would be the case, but it is!

Yes, the picture is really funny, but it's also extremely tragic.

Many of these children would die before 18. The rest... ≥75% of them would develop black lung & die before their 30s.

I am not saying this to be a scold. Just as a reminder that there's a reason why we changed the things we did.

In 2019, a certain someone made the claim that neuralink could "solve" autism, schizophrenia, depression etc. This claim is so fantastical that it's advanced science fiction.

Crewed missions to Jupiter & Saturn will be routine before we even come close to solving these conditions with BCIs. 1/n

First, in the screenshot on the left, the article says that the report found a "possible link" to cognitive harm at 2x the current water fluoridation level.

Later on, we find that it's "a possible statistical association." Not a possible link. Not a definite correlation. But a possible correlation

How not to do science journalism, example #813566,

This doozy of an article from Slate. As with many such things, there are layers to how poorly thought out this article is. Strap in.

The Apollo Guidance Computer was also known as the computer with Little Old Lady memory; these women would quite literally weave the program into being by hand. By the end of the program, they instinctively knew if a board was up to par or not, even if it passed tests & met existing standards.

Oh look! It's a baby Dragon!

FYI, the private space age started 11 years ago today, when the 3rd Falcon 9 launched Dragon to the ISS and astronaut Don Pettit grabbed it by the tail.

Launches to the ISS are now routine & it's awe inspiring to watch the people working at SpaceX manifest the future.

The degree to which an orbit "self-cleans" decreases exponentially, the higher up you go. The higher up you are, the longer you'll stay up here.

You can see this relationship here. As long as we operate these satellites at lower altitudes, we should be OK.
May 17, 2023 at 1:08 PM
But here's the money quote that I'm referencing.

Again space is big. It's also filled with a vanishingly few molecules that are enough to slow stuff down at lower altitudes. What this means is that for lower orbits space is big AND self-cleaning.

When you lose weight, most of the matter that you “lose” goes out via your lungs! You are literally exhaling your fat away.

Also, plants grow by grabbing carbon from the air. You can test this yourself by germinating a plant in a small cup & then recording the weight change over time.

America’s first space station was in trouble after launch. Vibration had caused its micrometeorite & sun shield to get dislodged and hit one of the solar panels.

Power was dropping. Temps were rising. Toxic materials were leaking. Not great.

So they sewed a new one. By hand & saved the station.

Just your daily reminder that orcas have memes. And a culture w/ fads

In the 1980s, an orca started wearing a dead salmon on her nose. Others soon followed. They copied our pioneer until everyone was doing it. They then subsequently got bored, abandoned the trend & forgot about it for a generation.

Just your regularly scheduled reminder that during Project Deep Ops, the US Navy trained two orcas and two pilot whales to recover "pinged" objects from the bottom of the ocean.

They made harnesses and attachments that the whales could use to grab & manipulate objects.

There’s a fascinating link between creativity and great science. Creativity cannot be constrained to one field or another.

There’s likely to be a direct relationship between the profoundness of a work and the likelihood that the scientists behind it engage in creative pursuits.
