Look at these tiny alchemical dragons! They're so cute!

Fellow medievalists! What do you call this swirly ink ribbon (Danish "sløjfe") that often concludes sections in manuscripts? An ink bow? Pen bow? Pen ribbon? #MedievalManuscript

The contestants for this year's Oddest Book Title are, as usual, superb. I had a tough time picking my favorite, which is a good predicament to be in: www.thebookseller.com/dynamic-form...

What a good looking alpine chough! #Dolomites

I was always particularly entranced by this lobster decanter, which seems impractical to use and impossible to clean once you've done so. I once saw it on a list of "what to get for someone who has everything": gallettishop.com/products/mas...

With Banned Books Week coming up, does anyone know of a searchable database of banned books? I would love to figure out what I've read this past year that's been banned. #AmReading

Usually I have at least one long backpacking trip every summer. This year, it was through the eastern Sierra Nevadas. I got to revisit some of the trails I did on the JMT, and climb new mountains. My happy place :)

If I mentioned all the films, this thread would get out of control. I know #WorldCon is over now, but maybe you’ll see some of these films floating around. Watch them! The shorts are mostly under 15 min, and if you want something longer, the features are well worth your time too. 12/13

Last but not least, in a world where there’s the opportunity to live forever, The Ladder was a thoughtful examination of how we make that choice. It was also the first narrative feature film produced in Ketchikan, Alaska since 1954 and features a bunch of locals! 11/13

All of those were shorts, but there were lots of feature films to love! One fun adaptation was Shakespeare’s The Tempest done in a sci-fi style and filmed out in the Mojave Desert to give it an otherworldly feel. The scenery was magnificent. 10/13

In contrast, Alejandro! (USA) took a different approach with no narration or dialogue, and yet I heard gasps and sniffles from the watching audience. 🪅 9/13

The A to Z of Being an Excellent Kid (Spain) also had a twist. The film is primarily acted by two adorable kids (who do a great job!), and the director did well pulling it all together with an overriding narration. 8/13

Humor was a strong component in many of the submissions, even (or especially?) in the horror films. Girl Dinner (USA) had two women on a date, and you think you know what they’re talking about but you very much don’t. I loved it. 7/13

I thought Lupe Q and the Galactic Corn Cake (Canada) was hilarious. As I like to be surprised, I never read the descriptions first, but the summary says: “Lupe doesn’t care about her abuela’s cooking lessons, she just wants to rock with her badass punk band.” What’s not to love? 6/13

Hearing the reactions from the WorldCon audience was incredibly validating. I don’t think there was a dry eye at the end of An Old Friend (USA). The performances by Jason Faunt and Tom Skerritt were heartwrenching. 5/13

Influenced by 1950s sci-fi, Invasion ’53 (USA) had a strong Twilight Zone vibe. It was the director’s debut, and it’s been a blast to watch the short get traction elsewhere. I’d see it mentioned in @file770.bsky.social and grin a little to myself and think: I can’t wait for Seattle to see it! 4/13

We received submissions from almost every continent. (There’s an opportunity for you, Antarctic research staff! Next time! 🐧🎬) Catty Bete (Brazil) won our award for Best Horror Film. I loved the use of b&w vs color in the film. Plus all the cats! 3/13

All of us judges spent the last year watching hours upon hours of films to select the very best for you. As you can imagine, this took up a good part of my time and I’m not ready to let it all go. Stick with me as I shout about some of the films you might have seen (or missed!) this last week! 2/13

I hope that everyone got a chance to drop in on the WorldCon Film Festival we had @seattlein2025.org This was my first time ever being involved with a film fest and I had no idea what to expect. Before time entirely slips away, I want to revel some more in the films. They were all great! 1/13

Having not had quite enough sleep this weekend, I strongly identify with the drawing in this medieval manuscript.
