Ontario 🇨🇦
A cool (13°C), rainy, fall day in rural Ontario and biking to work is STILL more fun than driving.

I do need a different/proper rain coat for biking though... Drop your recs please! I'm strongly considering one from Rain Sisters but the price tag makes me hesitant.

Amazing news, I'm going to bask in how happy this makes me for the rest of the week.

I hope @chrismoise.ca is working just as hard to provide safe bike lanes and other travel routes for people who use scooters and bikes so they don't have to choose between the sidewalk and the death trap that is many of the roads in Toronto. 👍🏼

Update:

We hypothesize that the protective insert may have been rubbing just a little on the tube (there are weird wear marks) and the combination of that + extreme heat yesterday may have been the final straw that caused a leak.

Did a little ear acupuncture on myself today while I had a gap between patients (Ontario news has me ✨ stressed ✨ today).

Yes, it's a lot more challenging to do this in a mirror than it is on another person.

I took the long way home from work yesterday on my e-bike and the never-quite-materialized-thunderstorm clouds made for some very pretty views.

The 12 min ride (the direct way) very easily turns into a 25 min ride taking this trail and I'm always glad to have done it.

It's finally warm enough that average ppl are out biking and I'm so glad I was looking out the window at this exact moment bc I think this is the first time I've ever witnessed a passenger on a bike in Hanover.

We love to see it.

Hanover Town Council is holding a Special Meeting to review the town's Official Plan.

I'm here to observe and see what's on the minds of our councillor and staff and will Start time is 4pm.

I am one of two public members here lol.

The fight against Bill 212 continues.

If all of this nonsense *gestures vaguely towards the US* makes you feel powerless, take action locally.

THIS is something you can do to help keep a good thing (cycling infrastructure!) from being destroyed in Toronto. Every person who can show up helps!

From the Ontario NUMTOTs FB group:

It doesn't seem surprising for Furey to have a Swastitruck, but dude read the room???

At least we can be thankful that he didn't win the council seat he was going for after losing the mayoral race (thanks for your hard work @progresstoronto.bsky.social )

The Town of Hanover is reviewing it's official plan + holding a public meeting for input (see pics).

I'd love to know what *specific* priorities people think are most important for Ontario small towns (Hanover's pop. is ~8.5k) right now.

Hey

Heeeeeeey

Do you have a plan for Ontario election day on Thursday? Polls are 9am-9pm. Maybe offer rides to people who could have trouble getting there, or ask if people want to go with you!

Here, you deserve a lil treat.

(Please send fur baby pics I'm so tired of the news)

I love charts like this to help us visualize the impact of health interventions like vaccines. When the MMR vaccine was introduced, it led to an incredible decrease in cases of and deaths from measles.

As groups of cases start to pop up again, remember this chart.

I have never seen this many road closures. It's sunny and clear where I am right now, but I think all of the plowing crews have just been overwhelmed with the amount of snow in the last 3 days.

If you know a snowplow driver, I'm sure some words of appreciation wouldn't go amiss right now.
February 18, 2025 at 5:41 PM
Everyone around here is gearing up for another dumping of snow tonight and tomorrow (and maybe freezing rain?) but this morning it was sunny and absolutely beautiful.

I don't go out much in the winter so this is my enrichment time lol.
February 12, 2025 at 6:28 PM
The polar vortex a few weeks ago was my limit. I still biked to work every day but -27°C with the wind had me questioning my choices lol.

It definitely takes getting used to and I wouldn't recommend it for ppl who haven't biked in the cold before. I *started out* only biking in the summer though.
February 12, 2025 at 3:44 PM
It's fairly common for me to get passed (while going ~30km/h) by vehicles which then have to slow down for something just up ahead: A stop sign, people, a light, another car.

I like biking b/c it offers a different perspective on how we tend to *hurry up and wait* through our days.
February 12, 2025 at 4:57 AM
Oops, guess I haven't been biking all winter then. Guess I'll go sell my ebike and buy a car b/c I NEED it. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 🤔

Also, ALL transportation options are "critical infrastructure" but they're using it to mean "roads for cars". Sure it's different place to place but diversity is always better.

Ep.15

It snowed a lot today and was warm so my bike had a layer of ice in some places that I had to brush off under all this snow.

I also made it home with 2% of my battery left to spare ✌🏼

There has been a noticeable uptick in guillotine content on my IG feed in the last few months.

For example, this by @ savannahalexandraart

I'm here for it 😆

Ep.14

It's snowing almost every day and they're having a hard time keeping sidewalks clear (kudos for regularly removing the banks tho) so I've been taking the road almost the whole way to work.

It's really pretty when it's snowing. I feel like I get to enjoy it more while biking.

Ep.13

This is it gang. This is about all I can tolerate for cold.

On my ebike commute in I could feel the cold from the wind through my jacket. And I'm wearing a base layer, a thick wool ski sweater, and a snowboard jacket. It was fine for the 12 minute ride but damn.
January 22, 2025 at 4:45 PM
I slowed down a lot so it felt more goofy than anything, I'll probably have a bit of a bruise on my forearm and shin tomorrow. Mostly just embarrassed 😩

Some sand would've made a big difference (it's too cold for salt) but everyone falls eventually. Just try to be as safe as possible about it.
January 21, 2025 at 10:05 PM
I'm heading home early b/c some patients cancelled in anticipation of snow + wind = poor road visibility later, but it's pretty nice out right now so I'm taking the opportunity to have a sunny ride home.

I'm consistently pleased with how well my @ternbicycles.com HSD is handling it's first winter.
