For me, a very muddy calculus. Politics isn't something I understand well, and all the backroom finagling, horse trading, deal making -- I can't begin to grasp the nuances of that. So I have to look at the arcs. How did certain things play out over time? How do the actions match the outcomes?

You do keep moving forward. Whether any given piece matters to someone else in some future (tomorrow, 50 years from now, 2000 years from now) is not the reason you undertake the work today. You do it today because it matters TODAY.

I personally think that some learning needs to happen on the "other side". They haven't listened to logic, they haven't listened to history. Some folks need to learn the hard way.

I heard a couple days ago that the Santa Ana winds were going to kick up, and thought (stupidly) "Well, at least it's not fire season." Oops. I have a sister in LA, who has her go-bags ready, even though I was more worried about my daughter in San Diego. Got the center of it all wrong.
