This was a truly heartening day, with deeply thoughtful challenges to the dominant narrative framed around AGI, coming from across disciplines and perspectives. Felt like the tide might finally be turning a bit, at least among the scientific community. Thanks @royalsociety.org!
1/2 I'm looking forward to taking part in a panel on AGI and the Turing Test, tomorrow afternoon (Thurs 2nd Oct) at the @royalsociety.org, w/ Dame Wendy Hall, Shannon Vallor, William Isaac, & Sir Nigel Shadbolt. royalsociety.org/science-even...

It was good to meet the team and steering committee in person on Monday after working together for two years.
We were at @royalsociety.org celebrating their new report on disability tech! 🎉

Our Senior Research Associate @louhicky.bsky.social served on the steering committee, providing expertise on accessibility for disabled people and sharing her lived experiences.

The Royal Society's new report, Disability technology, published today, calls for the collection of new types of disability data and for the recognition of smartphones as an assistive technology akin to hearing aids, manual wheelchairs, and white canes. 1/

Let 2025 be a year where the tech policy community thinks about how to actually be effective in achieving its goals of a better society.

There are so many examples of abject failure and so few examples of success.

Ethical frameworks, academic papers, and legislation do not equate to progress.

Keep your eyes peeled for our @royalsociety.org report on disability data and assistive technologies being published in summer 2025.

It's chaired by Sir Bernard Silverman and guided by an expert committee including Dr Vint Cerf.
At our event earlier this year celebrating the 50th anniversary of the internet, Dr Vint Cerf ForMemRS, known as one of the 'fathers of the internet', spoke about what is needed to make digital technology more accessible: #InternationalDayOfPersonswithDisabilities

My message at the AI for Science Forum organized by Google DeepMind and Royal Society: the world can’t afford repeating mistakes of the past … need to focus on ensuring energy efficiency and sustainability of the systems, developing better tools to detect bias in data, and inclusion at every point.
