I might be confused, but hasn’t it been “officially” explained? Something about the Eagles being superior beings that don’t interfere with what goes on with other people or something like that?

I’m a purist, I look for faithfulness more than anything. On occasions, though, the changes really work, such as in the new Musketeers movies that are mentioned in your OP. Slight deviations are unavoidable, of course but rewriting the story… no.

The French one? It’s terrible. Nothing at all to do with the source material. Of all the adaptations out there it is the least faithful to the novel. Avoid at all costs.
