A truly extreme version of “teach a man to fish.”

“there is nothing that delights the pride of power, more than a victorious strife with the pride of intellect.”

Excerpt From: Maturin, Charles. “Melmoth the Wanderer.”

Inquiring minds want to know: how did you get this data, and what does it comprise?

I think it can be very easily done! We’ll just put some bleachers out in the sun…

Trump can relate, was promoted from supply sergeant at his military academy to incompetent captain, marched in the Columbus Day parade ahead of the ranking cadet, arguably in compensation for having been “pushed out of the prominent company leadership role.” From LUCKY LOSER by Buettner and Craig.

Give me an example?

I wanted to inscribe haha, to voluntary voter relocation.

To win elections, in addition to building solidarity slowly, current elected Dems have to show some grit, actually take risks on behalf of their constituents, i e getting out of their cocoons and risking getting unelected.

Democrats should be holding out for more than this. Congressional Republicans already are scared about the price they’ll pay for dismantling health care. Dems should go big, use the shutdown to argue the larger stakes.

A lot of work to accomplish it even then. There will be no miracle, just serious sustained work.

When they said repent,
(Repent!)
I wonder what they meant.

Going back to party singing Amazing Grace at 2004 Republican Convention, tears streaming, entirely missing the point of song, which they apparently took to be saving them from evil “out there,” rather than repenting, taking responsibility for their own part in evil being done.

The key part is “building social connections so doing.” It does take a dreamer to believe we can overcome (the soft class power of) social distances to help vulnerable people. In some communities during the pandemic, we did this to roll out vaccines. It would take seeing this as an emergency…

I think that’s called ineffective altruism.
July 7, 2025 at 6:22 PM
Agreed, from my own painful experience with nonprofits. Skills and a paycheck are best, there is no friction-free environment for recruiting volunteers who have patience to develop skills…but I nevertheless hope we can get our mojo working to help people overcome these new demoralization barriers.

I’m all for building interconnection, and backing it up. But Brett Stephens in THE PRICE IS WRONG makes a persuasive argument that since profits, not price, drive investment in this domain, we can have generation all dressed up, but win’t be able to take it anywhere.

If the banks aren’t going to finance it, who or what is?

Please keep thinking of things. I worry though that helping people sign up for Medicare Advantage is part of the accelerating trend toward a privatized socialism for the well-off. If Medicaid becomes like the immigration courts, will the people who need it just disappear like undocumented workers?

Master distractor: the Senate is working to push through the extension of 2017 tax cuts (not accomplished), while we are (justifiably) outraging about this fait accompli.
June 23, 2025 at 2:38 AM
A good datum supporting argument that Trump bombed Iran to distract from renewal of his 2017 tax cuts in front of Senate right now.

Thanks for this reporting. I heard a slightly different version Saturday: No hate, no fear! Immigrants are welcome here!

Vocabulary fails us. FT analysis argues aid distribution locations are part of a larger strategy:
