I know, I was just letting you know. They want my definition because I shot theirs down, but never replied again.
November 18, 2025 at 4:45 PM
Because I shot down the idea that indie simply means "self published", I must somehow have a solid definition for indie games. Me, a random nobody online, lol.

Although I did end up making a little thread here with my thoughts.
November 18, 2025 at 4:42 PM
I know, but simply using the old "indie is self published" idea, that makes Ubisoft or Nintendo games made in house and published by the company into "indie" games, even if AAA. That's why I'm saying it's much more nuanced than the 80s/90s music definition of "self published".
November 18, 2025 at 3:29 PM
Meanwhile take Sabotage Studios, creators of The Messenger and Sea of Stars. The Messenger was published by Devolver, Sea of Stars was crowd funded at $1.158M and digitally self published, but Limited Run Games published SoS physical copies.

I'd still say Sabotage is an indie dev studio.
November 18, 2025 at 2:50 PM
I've actually thought about it, I'd say these days what makes indie devs and games indie is more about the studio and if they're under a larger company, less about publisher. Like Retro Studios making Nintendo Metroid games not so much on the indie side there.

I don't have a definition, I just wouldn't take away from indie devs just because they might luck out and get a small publisher.

Like there are some people that say because of how popular E33 and Silksong are and how much they've earned/sold, they cannot be indie.
November 18, 2025 at 1:37 PM
That and E33 has garnered such massive praise from all over the gaming industry, from fans, devs, and even some publishers. I feel like it's a white whale in modern gaming we won't see the likes of again for some time.
November 18, 2025 at 1:33 PM
Other arguments can be made about funding and contractors, but are you saying: "if a small publisher that helps publish indie devs...publishes a game, it can no longer be considered indie"??

I know the origins of the term "indie" especially in music, but these days it's much more nuanced than that.

I don't know what you're talking about, the live action Mario movie was so bad it's good xD

That's not the storytelling, that's glitch to the end as fast as glitchingly possible while spamming A through dialogue.

And I haven't said anything against it. Nomination is one thing, but like I said when one rocks the boat so hard non-RPG gamers notice. Like we just had a big popular streamer coming out saying to vote against E33.
November 17, 2025 at 11:25 PM
No, posts are limited in size, I can't list off every series and publisher under the sun. I have nearly all jRPGs for PS1 and PS2, a number of DS and PS3, and oh heck my Steam library. But remind me how often a jRPG rocks the boat so hard nearly all non-RPG gamers notice??
November 17, 2025 at 11:18 PM
Sure if you stop at my first comment. You could read the two follow-ups I made because posts are limited.

Also, I wasn't a VII fan, haven't played Persona, but I've been an avid jRPG fan my whole life playing big and small games.

VERY impressive aerial combat there, very nice.

.....I love and hate this xD
November 17, 2025 at 9:27 PM
And E33 hit such massive popularity that it brought jRPGs back into the limelight.

Yes Digimon is here, even Pokemon up until Legend ZA was still turn based, there are amazing gems like Sea of Stars and Eiyuden Chronicles funded on Kickstarter. But how many GENERAL gamers notice them??
November 17, 2025 at 9:21 PM
Case in point being people from Square THEMSELVES justifying FF going more action based because for some reason they think realistic graphics can't mix with turn based jRPG systems.

Sebbywebz on YouTube talks a lot about this in his videos about E33.
November 17, 2025 at 9:17 PM
To the people denouncing this post. Here's the thing, we aren't saying jRPGs haven't been around or haven't been popular...to jRPG fans. It's the fact that ever since Final Fantasy games went more action based and with more realistic graphics, jRPGs have been on the decline in OVERALL popularity.

But....how would he know "they were with Epstein all the time" if he wasn't around Epstein also? The ENTIRE planet they could be anywhere on, but Trump KNOWS "they were with Epstein all the time".

Gimme a break.

And you don't make the statement into an evil MTG thing.

It's pointing out the perceived "violent left" by right wing media, opposed to the ACTUAL violent right. Didn't need security to protect her from us, but suddenly needs security to protect her from MAGA sycophants.
