I feel this. Language and words are important, as is the intent and tone behind them. I actually like 'gal', but I agree that when some people say it, it sounds dismissive.

chica - too flip
sister - too familiar?
sheila - too Australian
lass - maybe? 'Kinda Irish, but could work
