Aha, the plot thickens! Vickery was exposed to computers, per 2008 Denver Post obituary. And both authors were proponents of this new type of medical decision tool.

Interestingly, book makes use of diagnostic schema, perhaps reflecting efforts to incorporate computers/algorithmic thinking into patient consumerism and wellness (outside my wheelhouse). Thoughts @andrewlea.bsky.social?

Today's #histmed primary source is Donald M. Vickery and James F. Fries, Take Care of Yourself: The Consumer's Guide to Medical Care (Addison-Wesley, 1986), 3rd edition. Encompasses everything from "skills for the medical consumer" to arthritis and fishhooks.
