While the failure had taught them a lot, it ultimately meant that they had to reconsider the very building blocks of their biomaterial. “We are,” Viktor said, perhaps a bit too defensively. He pursed his lips in thought, staring down at the game of beer pong below. “Do you believe we can do it?” When Dmitri didn’t answer straight away, Viktor turned a blazingly scrutinizing gaze upon him. He wasn’t even sure why Dmitri’s faith mattered. Perhaps it was that despite being socially frustrating, he was actually adroit and intellectual, with honors and a nearly-perfect GPA, just like himself and Jayce. But maybe it was just his inebriated mind fishing for a compliment. Dmitri did not disappoint. He spoke quietly, gravely, creating a bubble of warmth in the soft amber glow of the lamp. “If anyone can do it, Viktor, I’d be willing to bet it’s you.”

Viktor opened his eyes, inspecting the pieces, selecting the one that he judged to be about a quarter of the whole dosage. He popped it into his mouth, immediately accosted by sweetness, a valiant attempt to mask the signature cannabinoid bitterness. “You usually smoke, or is this just a fun, party-type of thing?” His mind wandered to the cigarettes he and Jayce would share on stressful late nights, bonded by the knowledge that it was a poor idea but succumbing to the call of the vice in solidarity with one another. A comfort, when shame was too far gone. Mutual self-destruction. “Not often,” he answered. “But still more than I should.”

The Jayce that feared he wasn’t enough, and curled up under his blankets when he was overwhelmed. He had absolutely no reason to worry about what Viktor thought of him. He’d already seen everything, and he was still on board."
