I apparently forgot that the weird gray bead that I tried mixing the kaolin slurry with the clear glaze had fine shell temper in it.

Oops... #ceramics

Orange, Texas, to Kissimmee, Florida. I was co-leader who assisted in planning day to day survey segments & manage a field crew of ~24. My main task was sending out teams to delineate sites, fill out site forms, maintain records & analyze artifacts. #archaeology

During a 700+ mile Phase I archaeological survey in 1993, back when I smoked, I bought a 3-pack of Capri Super Slim cigarettes to get this plastic mug in Mobile, AL.

It has been used for 32 years, but developed a leak this week.

Goodbye old friend.

First batch of yaupon tea from the new harvest. Very smooth. Much better than the ~3 year old dried leaves we had left. #yaupon #tea

There is an ~2 cm area of the edge with small flakes removed at about the same time or shortly (relative) after detachment. Indeterminate whether the edge was caused by expedient use or is the result of trampling without closer inspection. #archaeology

The patina on ventral surface matches the white patinated area on the dorsal side, indicating probable same age/flintknapping event. The conchodial ripples suggest possibly 1/3 of the flake is missing, with the break being approximately the same age as detachment. #archaeology

Large broken flake (missing platform - top) from Site 8HI473 with 3 different aged patinae.

A previously reduced boulder face (1. Beige scar) had this large flake struck off off it (2. White patina). Subsequently, it was picked up & a few flakes removed (3. Brown, starting to patina). #archaeology

Okay! Okay! I'll admit it! I was frogging it!

I picked the clay up & it said it was a frog pipe. Who am I to argue? #ceramics

Well, the lump of shell-tempered Mississippi River clay was just sitting there. Now it's a frog pipe. #ceramics

9 various beads out of the central Florida clay sans temper. #ceramics

Clay from Florida given to me by potter Osa. The rust red is ferric oxide accumulations along rotted root fibers. The Fe2O3 cations attach to old organic fatty molecules. #ceramics

#sunset in Southeast Louisiana, 2025.12.03.

I am reminded of a piece I read in the 1970s. Paraphrased, it said:

The secret to a good photograph is to see the shot through the eyes of the camera, not the photographer.

I'll have to see about reglazng the top 2. All the other beads look fantastic. #ceramics
December 3, 2025 at 5:03 AM
Well, the clay slurry/glaze mix (2nd row) is eh. The slurry wasn't fine enough. All the other beads did great. The largest bead currently is 214° F (101° C). The smaller nichrome rods sagged a little, but still worked. #ceramics

I really wanted to fire the duck head platform pipe too, but I couldn't fit it in the kiln without chancing a glaze drip on it. #ceramics

Bead placed into kiln. I was disappointed that the bead rack I ordered was so bulky, but it is what it is. #ceramics
