The Council for British Archaeology (CBA) and Museum of London Archaeology (MOLA) have published, online, a new survey of public users needs for archaeology. The most comprehensive study in 25 years, the "Trowel and Error" report explores how people across the UK engage with, value, and access archaeological information, which major implications for how the profession communicates its work. The research was led by the Council for British Archaeology (CBA) in partnership with MOLA (Museum of London Archaeology), and was funded by Historic England, Historic Environment Scotland, and Cadw. The project gathered over two years (2023-25) insight from more than 3,100 people, including archaeologists, students, volunteers, heritage professionals, and members of the public.

New research published by AIM, the Welsh Government, Arts Council England, and NMDC, explores the opportunities and challenges presented by museum land and outdoor spaces. The report includes two industrial museum case studies (Greenfield Heritage Park and Wheal Martyn), as well as a toolkit that allows museums and heritage organisations to start putting the recommendations into practice in their own land management strategies. Recent challenges to the sector require museums to go beyond artefact preservation and interpretation, and diversify their role Challenges facing the culture and heritage sector have included the Covid 19 Pandemic (during which 90% of museums worldwide were forced to close, changing visitor views and behaviours), and increased financial pressures.

Northampton Transport Heritage is looking for volunteers to help keep their historic buses on the road, with increasing demand for its heritage vehicles at a variety of events running from April to November. However, they are constrained by a lack of volunteers - whether that’s helping to maintain the vehicles or assisting during events. WORK on the first phase of a £2.3million Clitheroe Castle restoration scheme started this week.

The 2025 Allan Ball local studies awards are now open for nominations. Run by the Library Services Trust and CILIP Local Studies Group, the object of these awards is to encourage the production of high quality publically or locally funded local history publications. There are three categories to enter; Print publication, E-publication, and a Community Award. The publication needs to have appeared between January 2025 and December 2025.

The Friends of Chain Bridge Forge have lunched a crowd-funding appeal to teach traditional Blacksmithing to young individuals aged 13-16, blending heritage craftsmanship with cutting-edge virtual innovation. Through collaboration with the National Saturday Club, and led by experienced Blacksmith Ryan Atkin, participants will develop foundational skills in metalwork and have the chance to craft unique handmade items. This new project follows on from 2024's successful National Saturday Club, where Chain Bridge Forge trained young people in blacksmithing.

The Trustees of the Foxton Inclined Plane Trust have launched an urgent crowdfunding appeal to raise £20,000 by February so that the museum and site can open in 2026. A combination of rising costs, the long-term impact of COVID-19, and recent operational challenges—including lock closures that reduced visitor numbers this year—has left the Foxton Canal Museum, the beating heart of Foxton Locks and a vital guardian of Britain’s canal heritage, under threat.
