We're in this together folks, but consider following the lead of those who have already fought these battles (not just NAACP). ✊
Last week when we said: “We suing everybody”…we meant it! FIRST: The NAACP filed three lawsuits to prevent the Trump Administration from dismantling the Department of Education, to stop attacks on teaching history and issues labeled as “DEI", and to defend federally funded Equity Assistance Centers. THEN: We sued Texas Governor Greg Abbott over the state’s racially motivated gerrymandering to silence Black communities. NOW: The NAACP has filed a lawsuit against the State of Missouri to prevent an illegal effort to hold a special legislative session aimed at redrawing political maps in a way that would reduce Black Missourians' voting power. They don’t want to teach TRUE American history, they don’t want us using our vote as our voice; because they’re scared of the strength of our community. But we’re not afraid of anything because the NAACP was founded in times like these, and we are leading the counter-offensive to these attacks.

Continually amazed by the men of the USCT (Black regiments during US Civil War)

The man I'm currently researching was in the 32nd regiment when they charged down a causeway through a swamp while being fired at by two Confederate cannons. They captured the cannons. He survived. 64 men did not.
The 32nd USCT, marching near the rear, was halted in column so the troops up ahead could be sorted out. The 32nd, another Camp William Penn regiment, had gone straight to Hilton Head after its formation, and served both there and in the Morris Island trenches. Its commander, Colonel George W. Baird, was listening to the firing when Captain William C. Manning of Potter’s staff reined up before him. Manning, Baird later recalled, “brought me the order of the Brigade Commander to advance up the causeway to capture or drive away the guns, and added, ‘It’s going to be close work.’”17 The order was promptly obeyed; the advance of the double quick was necessarily by the flank along the causeway enfiladed by the two pieces of artillery. . . . Owing, probably, to the shortness of the range the missiles flew just over the heads of those of us who were at the head of the column, but they told with deadly effect at the center and towards the rear. Here the regiment lost . . . a large number of enlisted men killed or wounded. The enemy’s artillery was thus driven away and our line advanced.18

A quick note from 1876....

From near a major metropolitan area. They were called criminals. True. They broke laws, but those laws were 100% designed to repress Black folks and a certain kind of white folks. They resisted- like Robin Hood. These folks need a damn movie!

Wow. From HPAD. After a historic vote of 82% in favor of a statement decrying scholasticide in Gaza, the AHA board decided that the petition was outside the "scope" of the association. What then is the entire point of historians? Promotion of a particular type of nation (i.e., the US)?
HPAD'ers, In case you have not seen it, here is the decision by the AHA Council: The AHA Council deplores any intentional destruction of Palestinian educational institutions, libraries, universities, and archives in Gaza. The Council considers the “Resolution to Oppose Scholasticide in Gaza,” however, to contravene the Association’s Constitution and Bylaws, because it lies outside the scope of the Association’s mission and purpose, defined in its Constitution as “the promotion of historical studies through the encouragement of research, teaching, and publication; the collection and preservation of historical documents and artifacts; the dissemination of historical records and information; the broadening of historical knowledge among the general public; and the pursuit of kindred activities in the interest of history.” After careful deliberation and consideration, the AHA Council vetoes the resolution. The AHA Council appreciates the work of Historians for Peace and Democracy and recognizes the diversity of perspectives, concerns, and commitments among AHA members. Here is our response that went out yesterday: Here is our response that went out yesterday: Historians for Peace and Democracy Responds to the AHA’s Veto of the Scholasticide Resolution The American Historical Association Council’s decision to veto our resolution is a shocking decision. It overturns an unprecedented landslide vote at the January 5 Business Meeting, where 82% of the 520 members present voted for our resolution. Given that Council itself was clearly divided, with four of the sixteen members opposing the veto and one abstaining, Council should have allowed the entire membership to vote, as was the case with the 2007 resolution opposing the war in Iraq. Instead, the Council majority have arrogated the decision to themselves in a profoundly undemocratic way. This veto is also in bad faith: if Council believes this resolution violates the AHA’s Constitution, it should not have let it come to a vote in the first place. To decide that after the fact—and after Council put considerable effort into structuring a democratic process for handling resolutions—is just wrong. It suggests that the actual reasons for overturning the members’ decision are unstated, and the continuing weight of the “Palestine exception” to free speech, as we have seen on campuses across the U.S. in the past year, is also inside our own Association. Further, if this resolution violates the Constitution, then so do the following: The 2007 decision to censure the war in Iraq, which the membership approved overwhelmingly after Council sent it out for a vote; Council’s March 2022 statement condemning the Russian invasion of Ukraine; Other statements Council has made in recent years, including criticisms of the governments of China and Poland. We do not accept in any way the false argument that our resolution lies outside of the AHA’s purview and mission. We are defending the right of Palestinians and people everywhere to study their own history. We are denouncing the crime of Israel's scholasticide— the deliberate destruction of universities, schools, libraries, archives and cultural sites. We believe Council’s majority has acted in this way because they have good reason to believe the membership as a whole would support our resolution, and therefore they suppressed a democratic decision-making process. Let us hope this is not a foretaste of the “anticipatory obedience” to the current wave of authoritarianism that is sweeping our campuses. We will urge our members to write Council directly calling for an immediate reconsideration. In the next week we will also convene an online mass meeting of our 1,950 members to discuss further action. Steering Committee of Historians for Peace and Democracy VG and MP
