This is pretty much my point honestly. Audiobooks are a curated format while books are paced by the reader and are often nonlinear, better at allowing for a personal experience. It’s not about imagination at all, since that’s so vague and possible to evoke in any medium. They’re different.

Couldn’t you argue that voicing a book takes away some ability to imagine how characters sound or their tones? Their characterizations in a given moment which can’t be as easily expressed through text? Where’s the line?

Yeah, people are defensive but I don’t think reading is some all-important standard to meet. Read if you like to and/or if you need to for some reason. It’s not an achievement on its own.

I don’t think they’re identical. Reading a book (or graphic novel) is an active and self-paced experience, potentially enabling a personal journey through dense ideas. Audiobooks are more passive and curated, the experience linear and capable of communicating a creator’s intentions and emphasis.
