The Shadow Of Nosferatu: Robert Eggers' Lifelong Obsession Is Finally Here
No matter where you find an interview with writer-filmmaker Robert Eggers, you’ll probably hear the story of how and when he came across the picture of Max Shreck as Count Orlok that changed his life....

More Don't Look Up than Starship Troopers, #Mickey17 is a lousy satire on current events. A film as redundant as waking up and going to work with a groan and half-hearted smile. Pattinson is great, but Joon-ho can't play devil's advocate.

Mickey 17: An Unresponsive Reprint
When Parasite stood atop the movie industry in February 2020, it felt like Bong Joon-ho’s career was prepared to shift into the next gear.

NEW on my (free) Substack

Presence has all the formal finesse of a mechanical Soderbergh fastball that he winds up tweaking into a disappearing changeup. As innovative and exciting as ever, Soderbergh’s talents are simply supernatural.

Review: Presence (2024)
Ever since Steven Soderbergh nearly convinced us he was going to hang up the cleats and retire from filmmaking, it seems like a new film of his unexpectedly creeps up on us time after time.

Still laughing over the post I saw on FB where a guy said America is the only country where he could be “a punk-rock loving American capitalist that is pro-establishment.”

Seeing the new Soderbergh late tomorrow night. One of my guys is BACK.

I would love it if all of you who (correctly) admire this piece share some of our “discoveries” at Sundance in the next two weeks. It’s so hard to get traction on coverage of films that aren’t already on the radar.
"The future of cinema lies in rekindling the necessity of discovery."

For this @ebertvoices.bsky.social future of the movies, I wrote about the need to find some way to write about small films and new filmmakers.

“The biggest hurdle is getting people to read about these [small] films. Critics can publish reviews, but if they’re not being read then the point is moot. In that sense, the necessity of discovery is also incumbent upon the reader too.”

#TheBrutalist: Brady Corbet’s film acknowledges the existence of art and wealth as the blueprints for a spire of contradictions. Plus, the Statue of Liberty as an inverted gateway through the likenesses of fascism, capitalism, and ultranationalism. arbisimovies.wixsite.com/showtimeroma...
The Brutalist: The Shape of the World

Nosferatu: Into the Abyss

Some thoughts on The Order. A solid flick that could have used someone like David Mamet to really show us how evil and hate manifest in communities. Jude Law’s mustache, eye bags, chewing gum, and bloody nose rules.
