I also plant cardamom. Its leaves and its seeds are used to flavor dishes and teas. It's of the same family as ginger, but it stays green all year long, and extends with time through root propagation.

I also plant hibiscus, to favor biodiversity and enrich the soil. This one blooms during the winter and looks a bit like a Christmas plant, with its small red flowers!

I also cultivate stevia, that produces its white flowers during the fall. Stevia is the sugar plant. Its leaves can be eaten raw (they're surprisingly sweet), or boiled into sweet teas!

Nasturtium is another wild, edible plant that sprouts in Arbaro de Espero. The leaves and the flowers can be used in salads and in soups, and the seeds can be eaten raw or pickled, when they are green.

Sweet potatoes bloom at the beginning of the winter, when the tubers are ready to be harvested. Their leaves are also edible, used in salads, soups and spring rolls.

That's one of my rose apple (pomarosa) tree in bloom last Spring. Rose apples produce a delicious yellow-pink fruit with the taste of rose. They also serve as a support for my passion fruit vines.

Wild asparagus is a resource that nature freely offers (from Fall to Spring). But you need to recognize it, it's the plant with needles that sting like thorns. They taste even better than regular ones!

My nettle field last Spring. Nettles are delicious in soups, and they also enrich the soil. They sprout best in partial shade conditions under fir trees.

My bauhinia trees in bloom, last Spring. Bauhinias play a crucial role in the ecosystem I've built, as they serve of support to my passion fruit vines, while enriching the soil and structuring the landscape.

First video introducing a small part of the garden under a light rain. I show you how some of the fruit trees look like in December, and part of my daily salad composed of many types of edible plants.

An incredible thing happened this Fall. Some of my passion fruit vines started producing a second crop. They reached to the top of the trees they climb into, receiving more sunlight while being protected from the wind and the cold.

Typical harvests from last summer. Squashes, mangoes and passion fruits. I plant squashes in hügelkultur raised beds and their growth is really impressive (despite a dry soil, filled with roots).

It's the season of sweet potato flowers. Sweet potato is an incredibly useful plant, because its leaves are edible, in salads, and in soups.
It covers the ground and can even climb on bushes.
It sprouts by slip.

Hollyhock is a wild edible plant that grows in Arbaro de Espero. Its flowers can be used to make teas, and its leaves prepared in soups (even though its cousin, wild mallow, has tenderer leaves for that purpose).

Papaya is another tree that I have integrated in my agroforestry design. It's been rather successful till now, and I've been planting a lot of seeds to expand their number.

Basil bushes are an essential element of my permaculture design. They protect vegetables from the wind of the sea, attract bees with their flowers, enrich the soil, while providing us with abundant pesto all year long.

I've built a system of low-tech dams to transform the canal that crosses the garden into a long basin, where many forms of life thrive (watercress, waterlilies, taro, frogs and toads)...

I planted hyacinth beans for the first time, in a hügelkultur raised bed. Two plants lived and thrived, climbing into the nearby banana and bauhinia trees at more than 4 meters height.

My loquat trees started flowering. They provide precious flowers for bees at fall, and delicious fruits in April and May. They are an essential part of the design of my permaculture / agroforestry gardens.
