Don't forget, tomorrow is the day again. The first time in 2025.

At least one project finished before the end of the year. Who could have guessed that Christmas and the end of the year would be in December this year.

More information in the alt text.

The answer to this in Debate is: it's about people's acceptance. Because unfortunately, knowledge only plays a subordinate role as long as you give people what they want.
The mechanic was now complete and with a few minor adjustments Debate could be finalised.
October 24, 2024 at 7:22 PM
Area 3 has lot of knowledge but is somehow failing, so let’s make it red.
Area 4 has the most knowledge and wins so let's make it a happy green.
Now the question remains, in what scenario can orange win even with all of his flaws and red is still losing?
October 24, 2024 at 7:22 PM
Now we only need to colour every area.
Area 1 has next to no knowledge and is failing so brown seems very fitting.
Area 2 has some knowledge but it is still not much but somehow, they are winning. Let's just say a slightly lighter brown, so orange it is.
October 24, 2024 at 7:21 PM
Putting all this back into our DK-Curve and we see that the horizontal win / lose line intersects our curve at 3 points. Which gives us 4 areas and depending in which area you land on determines if you are successful (area 2 and 4) or if you failed (area 1 and 3).
October 24, 2024 at 7:21 PM
This gives a probability of about 50% that the dice result is above the line (= win). This is so important because the modifier can move the Bell curve into the Valley of Despair of the DK curve. But there is still about a 50% chance of success.
October 24, 2024 at 7:18 PM
We need to go back to the Bell-Curve. There are ways to calculate the variance of the distribution to determine a range that is thrown 68% of the time. But since dice only produce whole numbers we will criminally reduce this to
Delta = max(Dx) / 3
sorry for the math.
October 24, 2024 at 7:17 PM
We need a win / lose condition. Since the horizontal axis represents the dice result, the hight of the DK-Curve could represent this. But at what height should this border be so that it remains fair and fun?
October 24, 2024 at 7:17 PM
By rolling 2Dx, the potential results would approximately mimic Mt. Stupid. A modifier can then be used to shift the curve to the right and thus reach the other values.
So far so good, but something is still missing to make this into a game mechanic.
October 24, 2024 at 7:16 PM
Now we transfer these values onto our altered DK-Curve. Since we saw that approximately two Bell-Curves fit into this, we can assume, that the last point would be 2 × 2 × max(Dx). By doing this, we introduce the randomisation of two dice into the DK-Curve.
October 24, 2024 at 7:16 PM
Let’s look at the normal distribution for two dice any size (Dx).
Min value is the smallest value the two dice can roll. So 2 × min(Dx).
Max value is the highest you can roll which would be 2 × max(Dx)
In the middle of it would be the mean value: min(Dx) + max(Dx).
October 24, 2024 at 7:15 PM
Now we can see that the line shares some similarities to a Bell curve. Actually, two Bell curves with the second one being upside down.
And did you know that the probability of getting a certain number from two dice added together also corresponds to a Bell curve?
Which would just look like this:
October 24, 2024 at 7:15 PM
To give us some space we can adjust the curve a little bit and widen it. We also get rid of the labelling as we will replace it later anyways.

This is what the Dunning Kruger Effect looks like. (Fun Fact: it isn’t www.scientificamerican.com/article/the-... )
It basically implies that people with limited experience tend to overestimate their skill, because they still have no idea what they don't know.

These were the first thoughts of what in the end became the game "Debate".
Following the example of @capacle.bsky.social very interesting posts about game mechanics, I would like to explain the process behind this mechanic.
