or, code *can* be art and you could just get arguments against genAI slop that aren’t just “erm it’s not art”, unless you really want to get into strictly defining what art is (which is a losing battle, naturally)

Okay cool, I just think IoT was the wrong example to make the point about marketing bullshit when it does form a useful category for non-consumer contexts (and most consumers won’t have even heard of IoT!)

right but all those “things with a microcontroller that can be controller[sic] remotely” generally share commonalities that are relevant if you’re e.g., trying to secure them. like you have the common standards like MQTT for communication, random jackwagon limitations due to hardware and so on

others have already called out the silliness around procgen being labelled “slop” but i want to just interrogate the idea that programming sits as a soulless opposite to some nebulous “artistry”. is the implication that code can’t be creative or be artistic expression?

this feels like a massive overcorrection to the point of being misleading.. IoT is a category of Stuff often adjacent to OT systems - what else would you call a network connected camera or sensor that has embedded firmware? Maybe it’s lost all meaning in consumer slop tech, but there’s more beyond.
