NEW: The German government has officially collapsed. Olaf Scholz has lost a motion of no confidence in the Bundestag, as expected.

There will therefore be early elections on 23rd February.

"The central Umayyad Square is where people are celebrating - there’s a constant hail of bullets as the rebels fire into the air." - always find this to be bizarre behaviour, wasting bullets and endangering lives :/

Momentous events in Syria this morning. The 54 year rule of the Assad family appears to be over, with rebel forces taking to state TV claiming President Assad has fled Damascus.

The prime minister has said he will hand over power to the opposition and has called for elections.
