Based on the interview, this does sound more like they want to do more with cutscenes than shifting the actual writing focus. I didn't actually see anything in the article about the game's narrative re-centering the WoL.
"When it comes to expressing the unique role of the player as the hero, and in order to showcase really cool cutscenes and sequences where we can provide a real 'hero's experience' and showcase the 'strength of the hero,' we do want to put more focus on this moving forward," Yoshida tells us [via Square Enix translator]. "Within the MSQ, we can't always provide a unique expression for the jobs in every patch," Yoshida says. But "when it comes to using the jobs in battle content and bringing out more of that uniqueness of each job, we are working on a big update." Before Dawntrail even launched, Yoshi-P had teased that he wanted to counteract 'class homogenization' in an overhaul that was planned for 8.0.

Page 05. Shadowbringers In the first image, Viktor, now a war hero, wears an unmistakable bright red tunic with dark armor and a white cowl. Feathered frills decorate the cuffs of his sleeves. He pairs that with the now to-be-expected shorts and thigh high boots. His smile is sweet, non-threatening, practiced. In the second image, having experienced many of the horrors the First has to offer, Viktor looks considerably more exhausted. The color has begun to leech from Viktor's hair, but not his clothing. He wears a glossy white jacket, accented in red and blue. It is open, revealing a bare chest, but bound to him by a number of leather straps and belts. He pairs this with bright red braies and a pair of simple red slippers. Viktor wears a number of accessories, including anklets and red sun glasses to shield from the First's Light. Flowers have not yet begun to grow from his skin, but something green creeps beneath it where veins and arteries should be. In the third image, an angry Viktor finally at the tail end of a 10,000 year long divorce, having suffered the full brunt of the First's Light, points accusingly. His hair is now pearly gray, and a glowing flower sprouts from his hair. Viktor's garb is the same as the first image, except he now wears full white slacks and gloves that cover all but his fingers in an effort to stop green things from growing out of inconvenient places where people can see. Page 06. "Calamity Walking" (Shadowbringer Spoilers on this one) Two portraits of Viktor are featured, one of him before Light poisoning, and one after. At the bottom is a diagram of changes to his eyes as he takes on too much Light. The text on the left side reads: Though ostensibly “balanced” in his final conflict with Emet-Selch on the First, Viktor is irrevocably changed by the experience. In undoing the 8th Calamity, Viktor not only took on the Light of the First, but all of the wretched, destructive potential of Black Rose. Now near to a Primal, perhaps even an Ascian, all aether bends toward stasis in his hands, and Light unmanaged tips him ever closer to something far worse than a Warden. The demands on his body are obvious. Not just blanched of dark hair and vibrant eyes, but robbed of his scars and made slighter for the tax on his aether, ever shimmering faintly, always sprouting flowers. Page 07. Endwalker. (Light Endwalker Spoilers) In the first image, a politely smiling Viktor points to himself. His outfit bears a closer resemblance to a super hero or novel character than adventurer, bright red and white padded leathers paired with both chainmail and bits of plate armor. Again, he is fully covered, leaving little room for flowers or vines to creep through. He wears a pair of fantastically impractical red heeled boots. Viktor's second outfit, worn during the press into Garlemald, is a return to function. A heavy bozjan jacket and thick leather gloves protect him from the cold. Admittedly, the black leather pants are probably more flattering than functional, but he does have a pair of incredibly practical boots. He wears a pair of red-tinted sunglasses to protect from glare. In the third image, Viktor, now bespectacled, (good for him) cheekily shows off the opulent red lunar envoy robes he was most often seen wearing in the aftermath of the Song of Oblivion. Again, covered head to toe, he pairs the finery with a pair of white leather trousers and heavy black plate armor boots. Thanks Clive. Page 08. Dawntrail. Fully ready to go Dad on Vacation mode, Viktor wears a turali trader's shirt, white cowled with red woven sleeves that consistently rides up his stomach and a pair of charcoal trousers he got from Tataru. Of course, he tucks these into his colorful shin-high socks, and pairs those with red ankle boots. In the second image, Viktor has completely given up on attempting to hide beneath layers of head-to-toe clothing. It's just too hot in Tural. He wears a bright red draped dalmascan vest and a pair of ridiculous red-and-white striped Alexandrian pants. Viktor wears a number of rings and bangles. A suspiciously familiar blue crystal hangs around his neck by a strip of thin leather. At least his shoes, red slippers, are sensible. The third image is as close to cyberpunk as Viktor is able to achieve, wearing a brown leather jacket over an army green shirt. Red and black striped trousers are paired with the same black plate boots he'd worn months earlier -- thanks again, Clive. On his back is the axe Feo Ul gave him so that he would stop killing himself with White Magic.

Viktor is crunching into an apple. It will be three years before he falls in love with pickles. In the second image, Viktor, now the Hero of Eorzea, dons a flashy, bright red waistcoat over a white shirt. Light khaki pants gaskins are tucked into gray leather boots. The whole outfit is heavily embellished with embroidery and bits of metal. Around his waist are a number of colorful sashes. Was it the bangles or the breezy nonchalance that earned him the attention of a certain red-haired catboy? Probably the bangles. Add more. In the third image, a more dour Viktor sports long black gloves and a thick red jacket, khaki pantaloons and black thigh high boots. On his back is a simple wooden staff. This is the gear he wore while attempting to acclimate to Ishgard and trek through Dravania. Page 03. Stormblood. Viktor clearly made a return to less warming, conservative dress once the Dragonsong War had ended, pairing shorts and thigh high boots with a couple of loose fitting white and red vests. Viktor's hands and arms are bandadged, he wears a number of functional accessories meant for trekking through rough climes. He mugs for onlookers, halfway to blowing a kiss. In the second image, in True Final Fantasy Protagonist fashion, Viktor has opted to maximize his belts. There are at least four on him. Possibly more. He wears them over a tan vest, thredded with bright red and blue, and a sash. Viktor's absurd but still functional fit features a pair of baggy pants he procured from Kojin craftsmen and heavy black boots.

Excerpt from an abandoned fic: The fifth of seven! Seven missives delivered to the Convocation. And seven missives ignored. Because they were not properly stamped or addressed, because they slipped between cracks in sorting rooms, because they had fallen to the bottom of piles, unfiled. Some forgotten settlement that in its time had failed to do anything but anger the land it’d been set in ⁠— it would be remembered most of all for its catastrophic passing. Except, Azem had received that letter. And under the pretense of filing a first hand report on what had transpired, Azem left Amaurot. Headed west not two days after returning home from a months long excursion to the far north, and furious that bureaucratic failings had caused her flock to accrue losses she could not yet even begin to count. With all haste she flew; there in a fortnight, arriving at sundown to the percussive song of cicadas and a syrupy apple-colored sky. Absent was the smoke that should’ve darkened the air. No dying plants, just dense forest canopy. No cracked and steaming streets or people badly burned. Only a busy square and locals stopping to greet their Amaurotine visitor, their old friend, their Traveler.

Doing it this way makes it much easier to lasso tool the individual shots (front, back, & sides full body, close ups of face & details, generally) and then paste them into a proper ref sheet. Included an example taken in my basement studio even tho i forgot to dye the panels lmao.

The ancient Aepymetes unravels himself to provide material for the Warrior of Light, Viktor, to spin into thread, which Hades them works on a loom into a tapestry depicting a few of the ways Hades betrayed Azem over the years, until finally they are reunited on the First. Viktor and Hades sit atop the skyscrapers of the phantom Amaurot. Viktor is overgrown with flowers. An Ascian Prime fusion of White Mage Warrior of Light Viktor and Hades.
