This flooded lagoon presents changes in depth of up to 6 meters throughout an annual hydrological cycle. In dry periods it dries almost completely, leaving the sponges exposed on the branches and trunks of trees that were submerged during the rainy season.

Here we have what are probably Metania sponges on branches of trees and palms that were previously submerged in Cuyabeno lagoon in the Ecuadorian Amazon.
