I keep reading about a "black hole" in the British economy. Are other colours of hole available? If not, couldn't we just call it a hole?

If 6 people die in a car crash it barely gets a mention in the news. If 6 people die in a helicopter, news schedules are cleared for breaking news and police press conferences are broadcast at length. What's the reasoning here?

During the Cold War Russia produced wonderful musicians, dancers, writers, in spite of the terrible regime they lived under. In my own little field, #phonetics, Ludmilla Chistovich and her Leningrad group produced ground-breaking research for many years. What does present-day Russia offer?
