Part 12 of #rwrxmas! A mistletoe moment
Henry slowly opened the door, waving goodnight to his PPO, trying to be as quiet as he could as he closed the door and took off his coat and scarf. It was 3 am and the whole street was asleep, not a creature aside from him and his PPO was stirring. He had been called away earlier in the evening as they were getting ready to go to a Posadas, the Brooklyn shelter needing some desperate help in trying to find some free beds available. Having 3 shelters open now helped, but nearly every bed was taken. He hated referring teens to other shelters, and only did so when he couldn't find any other solution. Down a social worker due to the flu, he was desperate for solutions. He had managed to finagle something temporarily, and was happy his subdirector would take over once morning light hit. Alex was adamant in going with him, but Henry had insisted he go to the Posada before they had to head out to London. His casework had picked up tremendously in the last couple of weeks, and he had been in a frenzy trying to get ahead of everything before they closed the practice for the holiday until they new year, and Henry knew he was sad they had to miss out on going to his Abuela’s house before they left. They had only been scheduled to stay a couple days, so it made the most sense to stay home, Alex had argued against himself, Henry still wholly willing to tap out and give his subdirector control early. Alex had texted him earlier, telling him he would wait up for him with fresh tamales he had gotten from a vendor, as well as piping hot champurrado and some pan dulce. That had been hours ago when Henry still had a hope of returning him before midnight. He dropped his keys into the bowl on the foyer table, wincing at the noise the metal and ceramic made, the small noise amplified in the cold silence. He took off his shoes and placed them in the shoe basket, to be organized and returned to the walk-in closet later as he put on his house slippers. As he walked further into the house, he could make out the static noise of a TV that had been muted. He turned into the family room to see a Muppet Christmas playing silently on the giant TV screen, Kermit’s silent flailing bringing a smile to his face that only grew fonder as he saw a figure stretched out on the couch, rolled up in all the couch blankets as well as his missing cardigan from the night before that he couldn’t find this morning. He looked to the side and rolled his eyes at the fireplace being shut off, and the heating in the room had been placed at minimum winter temperatures. He went over and slowly started to unroll Alex when he noticed David was lying on his chest and it seemed impossible, but he felt his heart grow inexplicably fonder and more in love with this man than ever. He managed to get most of the blankets off, with David stirring awake somewhere in the middle. He lay there watching Henry fold the blankets neatly, almost sneezing when he shook a blanket to even it out. “Davey, don’t sneeze on Papa, we’ll never hear the end of it,” Henry whispered, slowly lifting him off Alex’s chest to the floor where he shook himself. “It’s not the sneezing that’s annoying it’s the fact that he sneezes in threes that’s the worst,” a gravelly voice responded, as Alex looked at him in amusement. “Never just one sneeze, always three. Hi baby. You fix the problem?” “Problem is temporarily fixed, and Dionne takes over tomorrow until after the New Year. I’m sorry I’m home so late,” Henry apologized, knowing he was the reason they had to try to fit in things today before they left for London. “No apologies needed, baby. You taking care of the shelter is never a problem, and I’m looking forward to seeing Catherine and the baby.” Alex had known correctly what exactly Henry was apologizing for and waved it away. He had recently seen Bea and Phillip, but hadn’t seen his mother in law in ages and their new niece was still a newborn. “We’ll just come back a couple days early and land in Austin and work our way back to New York. Maybe even take a couple more days off, even.” Henry handily agreed, feeling completely worn down. The holiday season was always tough for a myriad of reasons, and this year was no exception. “Let’s get you up to bed before we have to wake up for the airport.” He stretched his hands out and helped Alex stand up, helping him straighten up when his sleepy wobbly legs threatened to take him out. “Alright, love?” “Almost. Look up.” Henry looked up to see Alex’s hand holding a flattened out mistletoe. He followed the arm down to Alex’s face, a sleepy mischievous smile adorning it. “Feliz Nochebuena, baby.” Henry leaned in and kissed him.

Part 11 of #rwrxmas! Laundry silliness
“Alex! Where’s the ugly sweater I bought?! I can’t find it!” Henry called out from within their walk-in closet. Alex, sitting on the bed and flipping through a case file, looked up, peering over the top edges of his reading glasses. He was already dressed in his ugly Christmas sweater, a green snowflake monstrosity with a Spider-Man canting his head curiously. Henry, on the other hand, had gotten wrapped up in a FaceTime call to London. Things with Phillip were much better, but Alex knew nobody was looking forward to seeing Mary during Christmas at Sandringham. “Alex!” “Sorry, baby! I washed it because it was made out of that itchy fabric you hate, so I thought a was might soften it up. It should be in your basket, I didn’t have the chance to put anything away.” Alex closed his file, stood up and stretched, padding softly in his slippers to the walk-in closet where he could see an exasperated Henry going through his clean laundry basket. Henry was normally meticulous about how things were sorted and organized in the walk-in, but that had temporarily gone out the window at the moment. Alex couldn’t help but admire the picture Henry made, bent over and wriggling. Henry stood up with “Got it, as he managed to grab the arm of the sweater and pulled. He straightened up with a cry of dismay as he finally held the sweater up to find it shrunken. Severely shrunken. “Alex. Did you put this in the dryer?” Alex grimaced as he responded. “I was in the middle of writing case notes! And I guess I didn't notice it slipped into the dryer. I had tossed it in the dryer safe load and I planned on taking it out before I loaded the dryer.” Henry had begun to shake, and Alex hurried to apologize, approaching him to add to his mea culpa. Henry couldn't hold it in longer and burst into laughter, shoulders shaking as he bent over from the force of it. He held the sweater up with a “It’s so tiny,” as he let out another peal of laughter. Alex stopped abruptly at the sight, smiling at the sight of Henry absolutely losing it. He couldn't help but also join in on the laughter, the contagiousness of the joy found in a mistake made him unable to do anything to stop himself from being swept up in its tide. Henry ended up clinging to him as he slumped over from the laughter. Alex tried his best to hold him up, but just ended up trying his best to sit them both down on the carpet gracefully. It did not work, as they both ended up sprawled across the walk-in floor, as their laughter slowly tapered off, just occasionally interrupted by a hiccuped giggle. “I'm sorry, baby, I should have been paying attention to what I was doing. I know you were looking forward to showing off your sweater for the kids.” Alex apologized once more. He knew Henry didn’t really care for ugly sweater events, but had joined in when the teens at the shelter had told him it was okay if he dressed out of theme because he was too posh for it. He had been determined to prove them wrong. “It’s quite alright, love. I know this case has had you worked up. Plus I guess this is revenge for when I accidentally made all the clothes pink. But. What am I going to wear instead? I really don’t want to wear one of my usual sweaters. “Well. I have an idea. But I don't know how you’re gonna like it.” Alex and Henry walked into the shelter to a wave of cheers and laughter. Alex’s Spider-Man sweater was popular, but the hit of the night was Henry’s bright pink Barbie sweater. Originally ordered by June to their Brownstone for her to wear to the party on her layover to Vermont, she had needed to cancel after coming down with the flu while in DC. She had ordered it quite large for the slouchy comfort of it all, and quite fortunately for Henry, just large enough to fit him. “Pink really is your color, baby.” an exhausted Alex couldn't help but exclaim to an equally exhausted Henry later in the SUV ride back. “It really reminds me of the pink when you…

Part 10 of #rwrxmas! A crumb, nay, a smidge of angst
“Okay,” Henry says, placing his hands on his hips, apron crisply tied back and sleeves rolled up, looking oddly military like in expression and body. Alex did not not like it, mentally adding strict chefs to his future possible…scenarios. Henry had finished most of his cookie baking, deciding to give out packages of about a dozen types of cookies. He had mostly finished all of them and that morning had Shanghai’d a still sleepy Alex into assembling the cardboard boxes and distributing the cookies between them as he finished icing some outlines on the ones that still needed a final touch. He had no idea why Henry had decided to make around 75 cookie boxes, where he had stored so many cookies after baking, or why so many types, but he knew well enough to keep his mouth shut. Once they had assembled the available cookies in whatever order Henry had deemed necessary, he took the chance to escape by claiming David looked bored and needed a walk in the brisk winter air. He took the chance to stretch his legs, get his morning hit of caffeine and Henry a London Fog, and get both of them something actually substantial to eat. “H, I’m back, I brought sustenance!” Alex had returned to the brownstone, carrying his loot, and unclipping David’s safety vest and putting away his leash. He walked into the kitchen and stopped in his tracks as Henry paced around the kitchen island, looking at a whole pile of large colored royal icing bags he had prepared, as well as more cookies. These shaped in the forms of Christmas trees and dreidels and looking oddly blank. Alex sat on one of the island stools, watching Henry inspect all the little bags. “Whatcha up to now, baby?” Henry responded, talking more to the icing bags than to Alex. “We’re gonna decorate these Christmas trees. Just one color for the ornaments for each tree though. We’re not getting too fancy here.” He pulled out tray after tray of tree shaped sugar cookies ready for icing. “Not too fancy here? Baby, look at how many cookies we have right now?!” Alex exclaimed, raising an eyebrow at Henry's words. “You're adding more with decorations? You need a break.” He pointed at a nearby box with its rows and rows of Christmas cookies. “No, no, I can do it!” He watched with disapproval as Henry started to pipe green over the tree cookies, hands shaking as he spilled green icing all over the counter. “Oh bollocks.” Henry sighed, putting down the piping bag as he hung his head, shoulders tight against his ears. Alex breathed in deeply, and approached Henry cautiously. Henry was very proud of his baking growth, from starting with burning cookies when he first moved to NYC, to learning Alex’s favorite recipes from his grandmother. He was an … adequate cook after some first initial growing pains, he would never starve, but he wasn’t exactly the culinary genius in the family. But baking? Henry took to baking like a duck to water. Alex rubbed his hands together, creating some heat friction, and placed his hands on Henry’s shoulders moving up to his neck, massaging deep into the tense knots he felt there. “What’s wrong, baby? You’re putting so much pressure on yourself with these cookie boxes. What’s going on?” He felt rather than heard Henry give a deep sigh. “I don’t know, I just keep wanting them to be picture perfect. Like on Pinterest…. And I guess prove a bunch of people wrong about what I could and couldn’t bake.” He looked up from his slump, shakiest smile on his face saying more that he ever could. “Henry. We will come back to who said anything negative about your baking because I need names. I will personally make them apologize. But baby. You’re literally running a whole shelter, plus all the extra hours you’ve been putting in, and literally made hundreds of gourmet holiday cookies. Not everything has to be picture perfect. And-” Alex saw Henry’s jaw clench, a mulish expression on his face as he looked like he was going to argue the contrary, “if you still want to make the iced sugar cookies, I will help you. After you eat and lay down for at least 30 minutes.” “15 minutes.” Alex raised an eyebrow. “An hour.” “Fine. 30 minutes” “Nope, that offer has expired and it’s an hour now.” Alex gently chivvied Henry away from the kitchen to their breakfast nook, food in hand, knowing he’d have an easier time getting Henry to lay down if he wasn’t surrounded by cookies. He knew he’d have to bring the conversation back up later, but now knew Henry would slowly open up once they were in bed, the darkness in the room being chased away with the faintest of their twinkle lights as they cast shadows upon his face in the sanctity of their bedroom.

“Oh c’mon, baby! Think of how cute it's gonna look! We can dress him in his antlers with the twinkling lights and his scarf again. We have plenty of time to catch him.” Henry stared at Alex, then looked at David who was looking at Alex with a very unimpressed face. “Are you sure? What are these pictures even for? We’ve already mailed out and posted our holiday cards?” Henry was quite confused at why Alex had burst into his study, frantically waving a JCPenney mail flyer and talking about pictures. He had plucked the flyer out Alex’s had to see advertised Santa pet picture hours with a stately looking basset hound wearing quite a silly hat. “My ‘buela Marta keeps albums, right? I remember she took them out and showed them to you last time we were at her house. But she also keeps holiday albums full of studio pictures of everyone over the years. June and I went to the JCPenney to take the pictures up to when my mom was gearing up for the primaries and we hit the road with her. And I dunno, I thought maybe it would be a good idea for us to have one too,” he tapered off his monologue, looking at Henry who was looking at him with a soft expression on his face. “Stop looking at me like that, I will fall in love with you.” “That's not an incentive to stop. Clear it with security, I’m fine with going in before or after hours.” Henry pulled Alex between his legs, wrapping his arms around his waist, resting his chin on his stomach and looking up at him. Alex took the chance to run his fingers through Henry's hair. It was getting a little long, just enough to give Henry a beautifully relaxed look. “We can go online and pick out an album later. Maybe something leather? With some engraving?” “Okay, love,”’ Henry said, voice faint and sleepy. The shelter was having a wave of new residents and temp lodgers due to the holidays bringing out the worst of people. Henry had been putting in the extra hours to help out, as well as covering for the staff that had been slowly falling one by one victim to the seasonal cold and flu. Alex slowly hoisted himself on top of the desk, taking care to not jostle Henry too much as he did so. Henry went with the movement, burying his face further into Alex’s stomach once he was sitting. He bent down to adjust Henry’s head so he wouldn't wake up with a crick, and settled in to stay there for the foreseeable future. “Well, now what?” Henry said as he held an antlered, twinkling, and scarfed David in his arms. They had come in in dark jeweled colored blue and green matching thick cable knit sweaters from Grandma Fox, ready for a photoshoot. Their security had arranged it with the store so that they came once the store closed its doors late at night for privacy and security. But once they were there, they were informed that the Santa on shift that was scheduled had unfortunately fallen ill after eating a dubious lunch. Alex paced back and forth, trying to reach a last minute Santa. “I don't want to reschedule so close to Christmas, but we might not have another choice.” sighed Alex, hanging up his call after yet another fruitless call. He turned towards Cash, who was standing tall behind him, hands clasped in front. Without taking his eyes off Cash, who raised an eyebrow questioningly, he beckoned over the studio employee with a question about the costumes they sold. Henry took the picture Alex had just finished trimming and mounted it onto the album, pressing hard to get it to stick. Alex peered over his shoulder and exclaimed “They didn’t turn out too bad! Though, we owe Cash an extra gift this year. Extra big.” They added another picture, in which picture!Henry and picture!Alex posed goofily next to a slightly lumpy and grumpy costumed Santa Cash, David laughing delightedly in his lap.

Part 8 of #rwrxmas! A lot late lol
“Baby, it’s too cold,” a voice rasped out from underneath a pile of blankets on Alex and Henry’s bed. It shifted slightly, making a small hole from which an arm shot out towards where a sturdy leak proof mug with coffee was being held. Henry had enough experience with a still sleepy Alex that he knew to hold the cup by the body so Alex’s chameleon tongue act ended with minimal casualties. “Come back to bed,” the voice said, trying to sound alluring but ending up sounding petulant. “It’s too cold.” “Time to get up, love. Shaan will be coming over with the driver in half an hour.” Henry tugged lightly at the blankets, trying to dig out Alex from underneath while letting him have his warmth as long as he could and sparing him from the morning’s chill. He was bundled up in a thick dressing gown, an early Christmas gift from Alex, who remained unconvinced that Henry was okay with the bitter cold. He shook Alex's identical dressing gown at him, trying to entice him with its thick quilted warmth. The bundle of blankets shook in an approximation of a no, and burrowed in deeper, trying to curl up tighter. Henry sighed, rolled up his metaphorical sleeves, and went to sit by the head of the bed. He slowly unrolled the top of the blankets until curly tufts of hair were visible, and kissed them. That caused the pile of blankets to wiggle down a bit until a forehead was visible and it tilted towards him, a silent plea for a kiss. He obliged, chuckling softly at a cheek and then lips coming out from underneath. He pulled back, laughing softly at the small moue of disappointment. “Get up, Alex. The children will be disappointed at a lack of their favorite volunteer at the sledding hill. Up and at them.” A grumbled out, “For the children,” came from Alex, who was finally getting up from the bed with one of the smaller blankets and shuffling his way to the bathroom. “Did I say an hour? Because I mean an hour and a half. Now what will we do with that extra hour?” “Henry watched from the bed as he spoke, and smiled, a whole gums out smile when Alex did a neat heel turn and sped back towards the bed, tackling him down into the mattress with an exhaled oomph. Aight baby, let's get you warmed up and limber for sledding because I'm not carrying you back when you’re too sore to walk back inside,” Alex said as he crawled up over Henry and framed him with his arms. “ I will have no such problems. Now, come here.” “What happened to having no such problems, baby?” asked Alex to a cold, wet, and sore Henry on the car ride back from the shelter’s sledding excursion. The car’s backseat heater was blasting at top speed, and Alex had stuffed half a dozen hand warmers into Henry’s clothes and had tossed a blanket over him. He was listing to the side, leaning all his body into Alex, who wrapped an arm around him, regardless of how his jacket was absorbing the wet, cold, snow covering Henry’s. “When did I say I was sore? I’m just very chilled,” stuttered out a slightly congested Henry. “Uh-huh.” “Just go to sleep, H, I got you.” Alex ran his fingers through Henry’s hair and added another hand warmer to Henry's coat pocket. As they parked at the Brownstone, the SUV’s partition rolled down an inch as one of the PPO’s asked if Alex needed help getting a knocked out Henry into the house. Alex waited for Cash to open the door and said “Nah, I got H.” As he slid out, he pulled him forward and helped him to his feet. Once he was on solid ground, he squatted down and with an arm under his knees and back, scooped him up. Henry briefly woke up with a startled noise, as Alex quieted him down with a few softly murmured words. He waited for Cash to open the Brownstone front door, and made his way inside, already planning on drawing his baby a hot bath and rubbing and massaging him down to soothe any pain. Part 7 of #rwrxmas! Gingerbread houses!
“Baby, I'm home!” Alex closed the door quickly with his foot, not wanting for the cold wind to get into the warm house. He put down the large bulky boxes he was carrying and toed off his shoes. He bent down to greet David who was patiently waiting, tail wagging fast enough it was a blur against the flooring, and looked up to see a pair of legs encased in comfortable joggers leaning against the wall. He followed their path to see a comfortable warm and old NYU Law hoodie and Henry’ smiling face, a streak of flour against his cheek. Henry had been determined to hand out Christmas cookies to their near and dear, and was a week into recipe testing and tasting. Alex mentally added miles to his run and sets to his lifts if the delicious vanilla, cinnamon, and cloves smell was anything to go by. “Hello, love. You're home early.” Henry grabbed Alex’s hand as he stood up and stumbled a little, legs feeling stiff from the cold outside. He pulled him closer, putting his arms around Alex’s shoulders, a “Hi, love” whispered in the space between the two, a tiny pocket where nothing else but them existed. Alex put his arms around his waist and pushed him against the wall, Henry's shoulder pushing back against it as he arched slightly. “Hi, baby,” Alex whispered back, slanting his head to kiss Henry’s lips, faintly dusted in sugar. He kissed his lips softly, with no rush in the world, a gentle touch. Alex left his lips briefly, licking the sugar and spice off Henry had left behind, and leaning down to kiss him, this time a shriek interrupting them as Alex moved his cold hands from his waist to under Henry’s hoodie, cold freezing hands making contact with Henry’s toasty warm skin. “Get awayyyy, you tosser!” Henry shrieked out as Alex cackled, pushing against him as Alex held on harder and rubbed his cold nose into his neck. Alex finally let him go when the laughter got the best of him and he had to sit down to recover. Henry looked down at him, unamused, as David jumped on Alex’s lap, trying to lick at his face and yipping. “You cretin, you can just stay down there.” He turned on his heel sharply, walking into the kitchen with the stiff steps of a Prince Henry with his hackles up. “Aww. I’m sorry, baby, you were so warm and smelled so good, I couldn't resist,” Alex said as he grabbed the boxes he had come in with and followed him into the kitchen. He tried his best to look innocent and get Henry's forgiveness, and as he turned away from the kitchen’s island towards him, a slightly raised brow and pinched pouted lips that were holding back some amusement, let him know he had succeeded. “You are terrible and I hate you,” Henry said, rolling his eyes at Alex's smirk and pointed look at his neck where he knew a hickey from a couple days ago was hiding. Henry felt his ears grow red at that, as he spied the boxes on the counter, took the chance to change the conversation. “What are these then?” “Gingerbread house kits! Me and June used to do them as kids and would compete to have the best one! We haven’t done them in a while once June started college, and the White House always had the kitchen staff assemble them, so when I saw the whole kits on sale I grabbed a couple for us. Might be fun to do tonight if you’re not too tired of baking today,” Alex said as he looked around the kitchen, sheets of cookies cooking on the counters. “That sounds like fun, but-“ “On second thought, let’s do them-” Alex and Henry laughed as they talked over each other, each trying to postpone the house making in light of Henry’s not unsubstantial batches of cookies. “Let me help you put these away, and we can make the gingerbread houses tomorrow. I want you fresh and rested for me to kick your ass tomorrow.” Alex laughed, thinking Henry would too, remembering the time they decided to build David’s lifeguard stand doggy house for the lake house-and the ensuing frustration, screaming, and smashed thumbs. He turned, glass storage containers in hand to Henry biting his lower lip in amusement. “Is that so,” he said, amusement dripping from every word. He leaned over, elbows on the counter and his fist propping his face, and repeated “Is that so? Still he gathered his wits and continued. “What are your terms then, H?” “If you win, I’ll do that thing you like. Yes, that thing,” he replied at Alex’s look of excitement and heat. “And if you win?” Asked Alex, trying to dampen his visible excitement and remain cool headed. “A boon. An IOU to cash out later. Within reason, of course,” he added smoothly at Alex's skepticism. “Within a six month time frame and comparable to the thing,” Alex bargained, trying to narrow down the bets limit. Henry rolled his eyes, a mumbled “fucking lawyers,” dropped under his breath. “You have yourself a deal, my love.” They shook hands as they each tried to look nonchalant, though each knew the other had already started mentally planning. “Now, will tomorrow's loser please help me put away these cookies?” Said Henry as he grabbed the container and started layering cookies carefully. “Sure thing, ba-Hey!”
