Final thing for now, re: learning to parse what’s real and what isn’t: if you ever see something listed online, and are unsure of it’s legitimacy… 9 times out 10 you can just ask reddit and someone will get back to you by the end of the day. Same with IDing the real creators of obvious recasts.

(2/2) But the reality of the situation is that any website that hosts a service that allows folks to sell a product they’ve made is going to be home to both recasters and legitimate artists, and learning how to parse whats real and what is not might take time.

Also I did see someone badmouthing taobao, but there are plenty of legitimate doll makers there. This hobby IS more prominent in China, and real creators do use taobao to sell. I think the main concern with Taobao is navigating with the language barrier, while also having to go through a proxy (1/2)

The second hand market can also be a good option sometimes. Sites like Yahoo Auctions Japan will pop-up with some good stuff pretty frequently.
(Just be wary of anything with professional looking photos. The recasters have slowly started infiltrating YA, so youre liable to see them around.)
