SIskiyou Mountains salamander habitat is being obliterated through road building and logging in the BLM's Boaz Timber sale being logged right now in the Applegate. The Siskiyou Mountains salamander is primarily endemic to the Applegate River watershed and is a very special species for our area.

*Rare Plant Alert!* Also blooming in the Upper Applegate Fire footprint this week is a rare species, western false rue anemone (Enemion occidentale), which only grows in the foothills of the Applegate in Oregon, and is otherwise restricted to California. It burned in the fire but is coming back well
March 10, 2025 at 8:44 PM
Right now the first wave of very early-blooming species is starting in the footprint of 2024's Upper Applegate Fire, but in a few weeks even more will be blooming in profusion, and ASA is working to plan a field trip into the area to help people see the vibrant life that is triggered by wildfire.
March 10, 2025 at 8:40 PM
In southwest Oregon wildfires can produce superblooms, and it's looking like the fire footprint from last June's Upper Applegate Fire is gearing up for a good bloom this year, and it might even be better next year, as the second year after a fire can be even more impressive. Photos taken this week.

ASA supports the economic boycott today!
A 24-hour economic blackout is happening today, part of a broader movement against corporate greed, billionaires, and changes to diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.

California tortoiseshell butterflies are enjoying the warm days we're having in the Applegate right now. This species overwinters as an adult, emerging from hibernation in large numbers in some places of suitable habitat. They are often mistaken for monarchs and use Ceanothus as larval host plants.

We hope to keep this trail open into the future, although the Forest Service has dropped this old trail from their maps. This trail originally was used to access the old fire lookout on Steve Peak that no longer exists.
The first two photos are looking down Carberry Creek towards old Steamboat.
February 26, 2025 at 5:25 PM
The trail starts about a mile up Steve Fork Rd. (Forest Service Road 1030), and winds through mature and old-growth forests before popping out onto an old mine track in open serpentine/Jeffrey pine habitat on the ridge where the views open up.
February 26, 2025 at 5:22 PM
Baker's cypress only grow in only eleven populations in the world, all located in northern California and southwest Oregon. Iron Mountain has serpentine soils and an unusual plant community, and amazing views! While we hiked we did some minor trail clearing to help keep this old trail alive.
February 26, 2025 at 5:21 PM
There are some downed trees and the trail can be obscure in places, but is still very visible on the landscape. The Osier Creek Trail also provides access to an off-trail detour up to Iron Mountain to one of the unique stands of rare Baker's cypress trees.
February 26, 2025 at 5:19 PM
The old Osier Creek Trail is no longer maintained, but can still be followed from Steve Fork up to the historic Mountain View Mine site on Steve Peak, in the Carberry Creek watershed at the headwaters of the Applegate River.

Help ASA Buy a Drone for Forest Monitoring!
ASA needs a drone for our forest and wildlands advocacy. Can you chip in to help us buy a drone?

ASA is a small, rural non-profit that operates on a shoestring budget and we need help to make this expensive purchase.

Thanks to everyone who came out to our Botanical Areas of the Siskiyou Crest presentation on Sunday! It was great to break the snowbound cabin fever, look forward to wildflower season, and explore the high concentration of botanical areas on the Siskiyou Crest!
