update 2: he invented his own version of the furnace stack and the main bus, just by planning ghost versions of his designs. i'm just sitting back and watching and occasionally answering questions, he's doing all the designs wayyyyy better than my first world:0

btw it's basically beer-lambert, multiplied by a different scalar on each channel, since different colors scatter differently. each step samples a 3d noise texture (bad) for density and the voxelized light grid (slow) for the emission color, plus an ambient color so it's not too dark to see.

before i disappear into factory hell, this is the state of my volumetric research. looking into separate color channel absorption, 3d noise, etc, i accidentally it into clouds. probably can't use this for AppleGI, star world maybe? definitely banding and unfinished, but looks neat:) saved & reverted
