Usually normal but if im told the game is generally considered easy (and has a way of switching difficulty mid game) I play on hard.
On a second playthrough I do generally go on hard but never the "ultra insane maniac dante must die!" mode

Also bravely default 2 is not a direct sequel to bravely default 1. The sequel to 1 is called bravely second which also kicks ass.

The best part was how they essentially did the worst part of the first game again but fixed basically all of it's issues and it's easily my favorite part of the second game.
