Of course, in academia, you don't get the chance to work on anything else other than your hyperspecialization.

It's a cliché, but your most valuable knowledge and skills are the transferable ones. Over time, in academia, you are trained not to see them. And it's difficult to see their value until you actually transfer those skills to something else.

Do you mean in academia? I used to believe that about myself. When I was in academia, I was brainwashed into thinking my knowledge and skills were so specific that I couldn't possibly work outside academia. This is a myth. Another way academia destroys your self-confidence.

Sounds about right. Although, I've become increasingly annoyed by the term 'publish or perish'. It implies that leaving academia is a bad thing. I don't see how earning the money you should be while having a more balanced life doing what you love is considered 'perishing'
