Discipline - King Crimson

Robert Fripp dares to ask the question: what if prog rock got funky? The answer is a front to back heater of an album that really shouldn’t be 37 minutes. Ever active guitars, a classic ballad, even a talking heads-like track. Honestly blew me away, 4/5.

El jardín de los presentes - Invisible

Very interesting album. Argentina based prog rock with some romantic and lonely sounds mixed with a really good track that’s dedicated to a guitar solo. It’s neat to see what other countries bring to the table and this one isn’t too bad. 3/5.

…And the Circus Leaves Town - Kyuss

Heavy tones to be subdued by. Honestly might be a better Kyuss album to introduce people to than their debut. It’s like you’re stuck out west smoking weed as you wait for a ride home.

Stankonia - Outkast

This is like a guy you meet who’s all flashy and wears his personality on his sleeve before you really get to know him after a few drinks. Very funky, full of love, and a bit all over the place (in a good way).

brat - charli xcx

We’re a year removed from brat summer and my verdict is out: it’s fine. The highs are high and the lows are OK electronic pop songs. 3.5/5.

A Farewell to Kings - Rush

For almost its entire runtime this was The Alex Lifeson Show. Then it got into weird scifi stuff, which is ok because it’s rush and if you don’t like that then you won’t be long for this world.

Nebraska - Bruce Springsteen

Reminiscing on your time growing up in the middle of nowhere by singing to yourself and playing your guitar. I felt that kind of Americana pass through my ears; this is also the first Springsteen album I’ve listened to so that’s on me.

Just Got Back From the Discomfort—We're Alright - The Brave Little Abacus

Fantastic instrumentals with very hit or miss whiny vocals. If I grew up my whole life in this part of New Hampshire, I too would write an album like this. 3.5/5.

Either / Or - Elliott Smith

A guy who sounds down on his luck with only $20 to spare decides to make the best of his situation and record half this album in a closet. And it’s good even if it’s mellow and makes you feel alone.

Dopesmoker - Sleep

Frank Herbert listened to this while writing Dune. I felt like one of the things on this album cover walking through the desert. Also surprised I sat through a song that was an hour long, but it was worth it.

Quebec - Ween

They might be giants if they were good (I’M KIDDING PLEASE DONT HURT ME).

Genuinely good album. All the fun quirky songs masked two guys who Know how to make music. There’s a couple standout tracks on here, and a lot of this felt like this mix between quirky and hypnotic.

In the Earth Again - Chat Pile and Hayden Pedigo

A somber reflection on the staleness of the country world around you. Yet at the same time, you can look back and find warmth in it. Very good collab between two artists who felt so far apart and made something good. 4/5.

Fly By Night - Rush

The first true rush album is as good as any other debut. It’s like a normal 70’s rock album that wear their influences on their sleeve, but you get a couple hints of prog throw in there. 3/5

Year Zero - Nine Inch Nails

Interesting concept, ok execution that’s bound for a re-listen. Had some elements of With Teeth in the earlier songs that sounded nice, but it was kind of a mixed bag for me. 3/5

Ghayoom - غيوم - Nabeel

Opening the month with something different - iraqi shoegaze I heard on TikTok. It sounded more indie with shoegaze influence at times but I have a small scope of the genre so I’m probably wrong. Either way, 3/5, nice ep.

“No Title as of 13 February 2024 28,340 Dead” - Godspeed You! Black Emperor

If you want 54 minutes of feeling everything this planet has to offer, this is the album for you. Stormy oceans, blooming flowers, gentle breezes and empty cities. Awesome listen.

Larks’ Tongue in Aspic - King Crimson

A few decent instrumental moments weren’t enough to drown out everything else. In fact this is more like a mostly instrumental transitional album than a typical king crimson record. 3/5.

Maggot Brain - Funkadelic

Every song has the most insane guitar solo that either has funky riffs or smoooooth vibes. If you need something good to listen to for half an hour this is the pick.

The Slow Rush - Tame Impala

Perfectly acceptable album. The big songs are fine, everything around them is fine. Might be a big 3/5 but at least it sounds good so there’s no complaints other than it might feel a bit long at times.

Foxtrot - Genesis

I couldn’t really enjoy this, tbh. It had a hallmark of albums I don’t like where some of the instrumentals are neat, but I couldn’t buy into the whimsical fantasy and uncommon tempo changes it was selling me on. 2/5

Room(s) - Machinedrum

Big fan of albums that sound like they take place at night and have drums that slowly melt my brain away. This is one of those. Always bouncy, almost relaxed enough to make you fade out in the club, never felt like stopping.

Protection - Massive Attack

Sounds more like a debut than their sophomore album. Not bad by any means but it’s odd that this is what’s between blue lines and mezzanine. Still a good listen either way.

Hemispheres - Rush

Long opener telling a story over 15 minutes. Banger instrumental as a closer. Geddy Lee sounding like a wizard giving me riddles, Neil and Alex shredding it. Me getting sucked into a fantasy story because of course that happens when you listen to Rush. Good album.

Lonerism - Tame Impala

It takes what worked on the first album and improved on it. It also threw in more instrumental breaks to show off. I wouldn’t call it a biiig step up from innerspeaker but it’s got a few more hits on here that make it just as good of a listen. 3.5/5
