Ye usually I'd Nope out of that but I figured like, the structure of this book is already weird enough its like kinda abstract poetry in book form so what's one more thing. Took like a chapter or two but I kinda got the rhythm dkhgdjjdgfhk

-or not having periods between a lot of sentences or many times it being unclear whos talking in convos but that twice so far the author has used a tectonic plate metaphor when tectonic plate theory actually wasnt generally accepted until the mid to late 60s

Luckily theyre pretty chill/nonaggressive! also fun fact, most bites from them don't even need antivenom. they tend to dry bite and their venom itself is fairly mild for humans. Obv don't go picking them up, but if you get bit, as long as you don't refuse medical attention you'll 100% be fine

Literally like. Obv not everything that deals with sensitive topics does it well, but the idea that bc some things address stuff poorly, that means that something addressing it is in and of itself problematic is just like,,, third grader morality and critical thinking skills.

I really enjoyed Leech by Hiron Ennes last month. It's like, a Gothic horror from the pov of a parasite hivemind investigating a new type of parasite. I found it really atmospheric, and it delves into some dark stuff in a really emotional and well done way. Prob my favorite this year so far

What's the best book you've read recently and why?

I saw someone on instagram (whose posts were like "read diverse books to become smart and morally pure!!!1!!!1!") call Speak problematic bc it talks about sexual assault and just. That kind of thing is proof that just bc someone can read, it doesn't mean they can read

Also like, is it fanfic becoming "americanized" as a whole? or is it just that there are a lot of americans that write fanfic.

Ive lowkey developed a second sense for whether something is romantasy from looking at the cover but even then sometimes I get caught off guard
January 20, 2025 at 12:35 AM
And like, I'll make an exception for recs from people I know well. Like someone on coscrew will be like "this book is good and gay" and I trust that a lot more than some rando on social media saying the same thing. Like ima still research it either way but if I know the person then thats more credit

(Also I just ignore pretty much every romantasy unless it's recommended by someone who's taste I know overlaps with mine. Which doesn't happen to often)
