Frustrated academic. Prefer policy to politics. What works > ideology. Eudaimonia > hedonism. Too much Sisu, not enough Hygge.
Black Band Porter by Kirkstall Brewery. No idea if it's nitro or not, but beats Guinness hands down.

It seems obvious, but cutting energy bills is surely the key to everything. Makes UK economy more competitive so more growth and lower prices. Get to 2029 with people having more stuff and more cash on their pockets and then ask the country if they want more of the same.

Can't believe he still hasn't sent the SAS in to kidnap Trump.
January 3, 2026 at 9:07 PM
You're probably right, but IMO there's a 20% chance of a Trump health scare in the lead up to the midterms. Genuine or confected. Also given other known/rumoured health issues for Xi and Putin there's a low risk-high impact chance that all three superpowers have leadership vacuums at the same time.

Will stamp duty on property exist after the next budget?
December 27, 2025 at 1:20 PM
What will be the smallest gap, % and votes, between the 1st and 5th placed parties in a by election this year? This matters for tactical voting, as if there's a trend for 1st preferences to actually have a chance of winning then we could get a very muddled parliament at the next GE.

Will Andy Burnham be an MP by the end of the year?

Will Vance be President by the end of the year?

Doing an Isak? Off to Saudi once once the AFCON is over?

If he was at my school, he'd have been thrown out in disgrace if the teachers found out. If the rest of the Prefects had found out first they'd have kicked seven bells out of him. Says a lot about Dulwich College that he seems to have prospered and thrived in that environment.

Strong parallels between Major and Starmer. Is Reeves Lamont or Clarke...?

When minimum wage first came in it was roughly a third of the median salary. Now it's closer to 70%. This isn't necessarily a good thing.
November 26, 2025 at 8:08 AM
Is this relevant? Band G is 15/9 of band D in each constituency, so within Local Authorities it's progressive. Surely the better comparison is CT as % of property value between constituencies at the same band?

I feel a Christmas No 1 campaign coming on.

Make it a precept and collect via council tax. Automatic discount for smaller houses/poorer families, increased collection rate. Extra cash to pay for keeping world service and local radio, but cutting costs for many is a very good thing.
November 21, 2025 at 12:46 AM
Could be a lot of Councillors elected with less than 25% vote share. Hard to argue that's a good thing whoever it benefits.

Vegetarian pizza with extra chicken. Thank me later.

Signal a future peg e.g. 25 hours per week of minimum wage. Triple lock will likely hit that level in 2030s so no broken pledges. Dare Ref or Tories to go into election promising to bring the lock back.
November 16, 2025 at 2:19 PM
IMO it usually takes two years before new govt policies noticeably feed through into the economy and wider society. Judgement should be reserved for now. Problem is even there is an upturn, there have been so many missteps that it will be seen as despite, not because of, Starmer et al.
November 16, 2025 at 9:20 AM
When the backbench MPs lose their seats, they'll blame Starmer and Reeves. In reality it will be because they forced u turn after u turn and sabotaged any possibility of sensible government.
November 14, 2025 at 12:30 AM
Make council tax 1.5% of value of property like it is up north and prices will soon drop.
November 8, 2025 at 10:55 PM
Surely there's going to a reworking of formula grant as well? Council tax bands within each Authority are generally progressive and fair. Govt always had power to rebalance between regions.

If you want to stop small boats and smash the gangs, just put a ferry on a couple of times a week.
November 1, 2025 at 9:35 AM
But what do you get for your cash? Current ratio of income to house price: median house in SE c£400k, median salary c£35k. Ratio nearly 12:1. Mortgage 5 x salary so need £200k+ as a deposit. Born on a country estate, no problem. Born on a council estate, no chance. Y2k ratio 6:1. More progressive?
