Man, Gozer the Gozerian doesn't look as scary as he did when I was a kid

LOL, I thought your original ingredients-list post was a joke, and not an actual recipe. I am interested and trepidatious for how this dessert will turn out... :)

I love that someone's still making a decent 4:3 monitor.

Also I love your actual desk, and that I could just go find what that is on your website.

I worked tech for the Roguelike Celebration convention this year. Their main thing is a React-based MUD for watching talks. During the event, I pulled it up on an iPhone, and...

This was an easy way to determine "we have a niche audience that doesn't really use mobile" without injecting analytics.

Omg. I haven't thought about this era in like a decade, but it was definitely a thing, and that's a great way to deal with it.

Be poly for five years, and you basically got yourself a DIY MBA. The amount of scheduling, stakeholder alignment, and requirements & planning discussions involved...

Indeed I am! (That's why I know it is bad.) I guess this particular variant just didn't make it to the upper Midwest by 1988?

I never knew about this in the first place, and now I wish I could forget. Thanks a lot, meetar.

/me conspicuously refrains from making a reply about "ergotic literature if you really want to find text hard to understand".

You are so hardcore, dude.
November 25, 2025 at 11:33 AM
Have you ever done a similar Trek movies ranking?
November 24, 2025 at 11:17 PM
Correct.

It took me a good 5-10 years to realize and admit it, though, because that's how long it took for the "OMG NEW STAR WARS IN MY LIFETIME!!!" glow to wear off.

What, there's a third Light book? Sweet. M. John Harrison is so good.

If you liked Light for this vein of books, I bet you'd like John Clute's "Appleseed". (Which I learned about from Erin and her partner.) It's one of those books I keep extra copies of to foist on guests.

"Bright Lights, Big City"? I think that's the one from the '80s that's relatively well known.
November 24, 2025 at 5:29 PM
Are you a Riddley Walker fan?

It's not a book I reccomend to people, because about 80% of folks hate it and 10% love it and become obsessed and there's not much middle ground. But you sound like the right sort of sicko for this, so...

Respect to making a Notable Book that one can recognize from just the size and color of the volumes and not having to read the title on the spine.

One other thing: I often work with my main 27" display as my computer, and an iPad off to the side for videoconferencing/Teams meetings, so the video isn't "in" my main computer screen/UI, and it can still have like 12" to itself.

The graphic here left out some of the common arrangements I've seen (in the finance world): the upside-down Tetris T, the 3x2, and the 3x3. Maybe those were more common 10 years ago and less so now.

I'm a 7. I work on a 27" 5K iMac, and I like it so much, it is a condition of my employment that I can BYOD one to the office. I love having one big screen. I seriously don't understand the rest of y'all.

I watched this video and I heard "Komm Süsser Tod" in my head. Maybe I'm a sicko, but dang, just look at it.
