I am not sure to quite understand what this means... Is it a way to settle a debt of some kind? Or is it considered a "donation" to the Abbey as much as money would be? Does this give the family some kind of power over the Abbey?

Ok I'll do another reply to add that of course the convent is not all sunshine and rainbows and not every nun in it chose this life.
I am learning that some sisters were "promised" to the church by their families.

Idk exactly where I'm fully going with this but I just wanted to share this tidbit

Everyone who speaks to her is calm, reassuring, they acknowledge her visions but manage to also redirect her attention and soothe her when they become too frightening.
She seems to actually like the life she's living.

When you speak to her, you find that she thinks this room is reassuring, because the visions make it almost impossible for her to live in the outside world. Her visions and her fears are not mocked or ridiculed, neither are they exaggerated by the people around her.

She is locked away, yes, but the church's priest is always available to listen to her when her visions scare her. There is also no physical way for anyone else to enter her room so no one can physically take advantage of her.

At first I thought this a cruel treatment of a what would be considered nowadays as a psychotic woman. But then I changed my point of view about it.

One sister does not live in the convent but as a hermit near the church. She is considered a mystic because she has holy visions and thus lives as a hermit completely separate from the world in a cell that she never leaves and has minimal contact with the outside world.

One of the sisters in blind, in the convent she finds a safe environment, one that doesn't change and thus makes it easy for her to accomplish everyday tasks with little to no help.

Talking to the women in the game you'll find that in the village their main purpose in life is to marry, have children and take care of their families.
The convent is a place for women who, for one reason or another, will not be following this life path.

One theme that is recurring in this game is the condition of women in this time and place. And I want to talk especially about the different nuns in this game.

You get immersed in the culture and mindset(s) of these people and the game is truly a riveting experience.
