When Trump first became President in 2016, Sharaa was one of several rebel and former Al Qaeda commanders fighting for survival in Northern Syria after experiencing brutal defeat in the siege of Aleppo.

Stephen Bush was one of the first IIRC to point out the sheer scale of the BBC app's influence, but I think that dynamic is slightly distinct from structural problems in BBC management and journalism that Bush points out below. Voters using the app might not notice the degradation of BBC structures

Trends that might play to the strengths of the Green Party have been visible for years in ways that I described in a piece for @wpr.bsky.social after local elections in May 2024

An excellent piece on market risks by Gillian Tett.
The bit below is especially relevant in how the difference between a deflated bubble whose impact is contained and a sudden burst that crashes the global system comes down to convergence of political risks with market risks. on.ft.com/491k2Ey

The EU makes many mistakes and should show far more flexibility towards North and West African states in trading relations.
That is a separate matter from a UK government that talks a Europe-friendly game yet still manages to burn goodwill with partners in the EU over minor sums

It's quite fascinating how tradcath converts like JD Vance and Kevin Roberts are increasingly at war with much of a more liberal Catholic Church hierarchy in the United States

A key figure in US politics that I think a lot of European observers obsessed with MAGA voters haven't really got their heads around is your average boring middle class suburban voter who in the face of incomprehensible reactionary chaos hankers after a Normie Revolution.

Fascinating to see a Right wing think tank be this open about how it doesn't care about enabling young parents to pursue opportunities in labour markets.
