I kind of struggle with this myself and prize originality even though I have to acknowledge very little is truly original. So for me it's better to just figure out how I can make something my own, even if that means overlap. (As tempted as I am I won't quote TS Eliot's view on the subject)

Tbh I’d love to see a Disney version of that type of relationship; Toy Story’s bromance probably comes closest, otherwise will never happen

Yeah, that tracks. Typically TV shows don’t even deal with that outside of absurd soaps or will they/won’t they storylines. One of the reasons FNL is still an all time great. And Scenes from a Marriage, of course.

🤣 They rarely show that part so we don’t even have a trope for it! I guess the opening of Anna Karenina comes to mind, maybe Cheever more recently (much more common in novels than movies, anyways)

It's the truth! Poetry is really hard for me so I admire when people have that facility with words.

Will send my video game when it's done (any day now ...)

Haha, thank you. PS, love your poetry! (Probably should have started with that)

and it's not my place to judge regardless. Now moving back to politics where I will mercilessly judge everyone

Oh that's great to know! I'm terrible at drawing so I mostly have stuck with writing instead (to mixed results) and some photo editing which I suppose is related to collage making, maybe less tactile and enjoyable. And yes, there are definitely people beyond the ones I'm pigeonholing;

Yes - not to put too fine a point, the glossiest/most exciting to share. I do like a lot of these - Christo, Dublin Gate, etc; it’s the general trend that feels superficial. But if it exposes more people to art overall maybe that’s a net positive?

more contemplative pieces. As I write this I'm imagining people having the same qualms about any technology and the coarsening of art/society - which then goes back to your point about the conversation being one in a long line of conversations (if I understood it correctly)

Oh, not at all, I came in a little hot on the banana front. I've thought of this more with regards to food (plates that look spectacular over taste) and politics (don't think this one needs explanation); with art it's whether experiential projects that look fun overwhelm the quieter, more
February 11, 2025 at 12:42 AM
Oh, yeah - I meant societally, if that is even a consideration. I don’t have so much of a concern about the other two since it’s all subjective (one of my favorite stories revolves around the difference in kids vs adults identifying as artists). Also thanks for indulging me in an extended discourse!

Ok - understanding that people know the history and it’s part of a larger conversation - why this? Why not Joe Morford’s version? Is there a negative to artistic value being related to how many people want to take a selfie with it or is continuing the conversation the only point?
February 10, 2025 at 9:36 PM
and are they saying something new that's relevant, or is being relevant enough (since there's very little new to be said at this point)?
February 10, 2025 at 7:42 PM
I'm not debating whether contemporary pieces of art are part of the conversation (clearly, they are, and have to be). I'm suggesting that at this point the conversation that's more interesting to me is more about who gets to make/say something that's considered art and therefore valued ...
February 10, 2025 at 7:42 PM
OK, one more thing - definitely don't mind the conversation. I do, however, mind that six million dollars could buy a lot of bananas for a lot of hungry people.
February 10, 2025 at 6:12 PM
I'm being a bit glib - I do understand that each generation needs to reassess these truths as it befits them; I guess maybe that just makes me old and cranky. So I'll stop now
February 10, 2025 at 6:11 PM
I'll admit to oversimplification (given a certain limit of characters) - I don't have an issue with arguing about what art is, and ... I guess my concern is why this? Why not Duchamp, or Malevich, or folk art vs "fine" art, or cave paintings? Is it just that people don't know the history?
February 10, 2025 at 6:10 PM
Admittedly adding to the conversation and therefore proving your point, I guess my concern is we’ve been through this conversation before (what is art/what is truth) and I could really do with just skipping the postmodernism phase of society again

Do you use Affinity for all your UI/layouts? I’ve been using tools in Unity (with some exceptions) and now realizing maybe that’s the wrong way to go …
