In fairness, Princess Bride only did moderately well in theaters. It wasn't really a hit until it got to video and found its audience on VHS.

And coming from someone who, apparently unironically, named himself after Dorian Gray. Wow.

Yeah, it wasn't perfect, but it was still very good and had plenty of room to get better. Shame the fandom menance killed it.

Heh, ever played a Shin Megami Tensei game? You sweet-talk intelligent creatures into joining your party, then turn them into your blood slaves who you'll sacrifice in horrifying rituals to gain power.

And no matter how often I try to go through and clean up my wishlist of cruft I put on it years ago, it seems to grow faster in the meantime.

Finn's arc could have been stronger, but I feel like it is overhated. If you look at where he ended up vs where he started, he still had a ton of character growth. From cowardly stormtrooper running from all his problems, to a genuine war hero and likely future Jedi candidate. That ain't bad.

You joke, but a show set around the time of "Rebels" about teens at an Imperial-run school slowly overcoming the propaganda and realizing they're trapped in a fascist hellhole could be interesting.

Now I'm imagining an asymetrical multiplayer game where a spiral tries to drive the other players crazy.

EXACTLY. The EU had plenty of iffy entries too. (Remember that time Luke dated a Force-ghost? 🤣) The difference is, in the 90s, we didn't all lose our minds and start honking like deranged geese just because we didn't enjoy a particular book or comic.

Playing fan translations of weird Japan-only games is also good brain bleach, if you're comfortable using emulators and such.

In that scene, the original Star Wars novelization even clarified there was a 'droids rights' movement, a detail which was then ignored by everyone (Lucas included) for 40 years.

Really, the subtext of TPM is more generally "watch the Jedi sit at the top of their literal ivory tower and not do their jobs because they're too busy arguing over their recruitment policies."

I always feel bad killing DQ slimes. They just seem so happy and helpless.

Yeah, this. Sometimes I want a permanent marker at a POI that doesn't have its own marker.

Yeah, even on Facebook all positive Star Wars stuff was typically in closed/moderated communities to keep the trolls out.

I just hope Bluesky can keep its chill vibe as more people join.

(Says the newbie, hahaha....)

It's Solo. And I have a lot of issues with it, but the biggest is just how *safe* it was. It's like watching an adaptation of a Wookiepedia article. I think Star Wars should be swinging for the fences, even if it whiffs from time to time.

Reminds me of an unfortunate Reddit thread I stumbled across where people were simping for Kim Jong-Un's sister and saying she reminds them of Azula. Like, WTF?? Azula was an actual psycopath and *self-described* monster. If you're into that as a fantasy kink, fine whatever, but keep it out of IRL.

Ah yes, the most violent movie ever. What a classic!

In fairness, it's very rare for revolutionary governments to actually work out. (Just look at the French Revolution.) That America realized its first try at a government wasn't working, and successfully implemented a "live patch" without another bloody revolution, was actually kind of remarkable.

Now, more than ever, people need Buddy Christ in their lives.

(Seriously, I'm not even Christian, but JFC read what the man wrote for crissake.)

The infuriating thing is that the NPR funding is an infinitesimal slice of the overall government funding pie. Cutting NPR in the name of reducing government spending is like eating one less cookie for dessert and saying you've cut your food budget.

Also, call me crazy, but I kinda wish we could have some episodic shows again. Not everything has to be a super-dense long-form story. I miss the days I could turn on the TV, go "Hey, Star Trek's on!" and watch whatever random ep was playing without needing to do a wiki dive just to understand it.
November 26, 2024 at 5:13 AM
Yeah, Rebuild The Galaxy was hilarious. Really, I feel like all the recent Lego specials have been gems that mostly flew under the radar.
